Is this a good computer?

I'm looking for a new computer, my laptop stoped working and it only needs to install windows again, but the code that was in a sticker under the laptop is now unreadable and i think the technical help plus the buying the new windows will cost me the same than this one http://orderservice.mediamarkt.ch/an...gb-20-ati4-270 .

The question is, will it work for me?? Do you know a cheaper pc or laptop that could fit me?
I use the computer for englishforums.ch, youtube (there's a tv series that my son watches in spanish there "Pocoyo"), kino.to for spanish disney movies, skype or messenger, All office programs, etc. No hard gaming, no heavy uploading, and i would like to have a computer that last me for the long run, i cant afford to buy me one every couple of years.

Any info is valuable, Thanks in advance for taking the time of reading. Have a wonderful day!

Re: Is this a good computer?

it won't set any speed records but for what you say you need it will be fine.

You can pick up windows for around 100chf, or find a serial number easily enough off the net

or even go into a shop, turn over a laptop, and copy the serial number from the sticker on the bottom

Would it look a little obvious if I were to go into Interdiscount and photograph all the W7 stickers?

the serial numbers are never used, all the laptops have the same build on and the same generic serial number, its only if you reinstall that you need the one on the bottom, iirc the serial number is also good for 3 computers before it gets blocked so you should never have an issue, my 'mate' tells me he's never had an issue.

as for will they notice, I doubt it, quick photo on your phone and job done, PC world never noticed, or if they did they didn't care, when my 'mate' did it in the uk

Say thanks to 'your mate' from me.

I still need to pay for saving all my info from the lap before reinstalling windows. The lap doesnt go on because it says a file was deleted or corrupt and i need to install that file or reinstall windows, i dont just reinstall windows because all my photos are there, wedding, babys etc. i do need someone to make it because its not just with a cd, my lap is a travel acer one so it doesnt have for cd only usb.

Does someone know a cheap tech support person i could go to?
Thanks again for all info

In situations like that I buy a new hard drive, 50 chf from digitec, install windows on that.
Put the old drive into an external drive box, copy the whole windows installation into an oldPC folder on the new drive, then save the old drive forever as a backup. Old drive is basically worthless, and probably not reliable enough to use daily anymore.

Or buy a new PC and an empty hard drive box. You need to know if your old drive is PATA (pretty old) or SATA (most laptops in last 3 to 4 years).

I've still got a 10MB MFM HDD somewhere. I upgraded it to 20MB (there's no way I could ever need more than that).

Re: Is this a good computer?

its fairly priced, 500 GB hard disk might be more if you dont wana to store movies, 4 GB RAM is good to surf internet and download anything,,
you can also look around for laptops online, there are pretty good offers in amazon

That applies if you have not deleted the Recovery space on the hard disk, so there is nothing to recover from.

Different, simpler idea. Buy an external USB hard drive mainly for backups. Install windows on that while it is empty. Then boot from the external drive, copy everything from the internal (old) drive over to the external drive.

You could run like that, for a bit, and when you are confident, fix the internal drive.

Re: Is this a good computer?

If you want something to last, get a mac (ibm was good too but their new owner might be cutting corners).

If you only need to re-install windows do as the others have said.

If you want to recover the data... well, there is nothing special. Just reinstall windows on top of the old one. No data is erased during the install, it is just the old files that get rewritten. All your folders outside windows will still be there after the installation.

Get an external drive to do backups. It's very very cheap now and you can just wipe clean the computer when problems arise.

Are you spanish speaker? terco has a meaning in spanish.

The thing is that i really cant afford nothing over 500chf and that computer was looking good, but wanted to know if it was worthed. Since i have never back info up or anything im afraid to even touch my laptop and loose the info inside, i know i know everybody has say it happens nothing, but what if my magical hands manage to erase my stuff. its not just any stuff is all the record of being pregnant, the first photos of each son, etc etc etc. all those things even do' will be in my mind forever, i also enjoy to look the actuall pics once in a while.

I'm trying to find a "cheap" technical support on internet who is also english speaker so they do the back up. I really dont want to risk my info.

Thank you all for the help given, i will see if i can be present when doing the backing up and see how its done for future references and for sure i will buy a external disc. thanks again and have a wonderful night!
