Ipod Touch - how does it work?

Hi all,

I am not a big Apple fan... but my son is keen on acquiring one of those new Ipod Touch thing and I spent some time with him looking at the "thing" on the internet.

I saw you could "talk/video-conf" with friends (Face time apps) a-la-skype and read/write emails... Nice and cool things to do, but last time I checked these types of application are only available when you have an internet connection... as far as I know the Ipod Touch is no Iphone, so where does the internet connection come from and most importantly who pays for it and how?

thanks for any explanation you can offer - please layman talk so I can follow...

many thanks
Motus

Re: Ipod Touch - how does it work?

The internet would come from a wifi router or wifi source.

Whoever pays for said wifi source will pay for the internet. It's a great device for kids though. He will love it.

Re: Ipod Touch - how does it work?

Thanks for this explanation!

so basically it will work at home while in range of the wifi router, and he will loose connection as soon as he is out. right?

unless he connects to a wifi hotspot? starbucks, macdo etc... is that correct?

The underlying point is that I dont need to buy the "thing" in Switzerland then as its not attached to a mobile operator. So my sense is that if I buy it in France or the UK for example, it will work fine here, all that matters is the Wifi connection....

thanks for your views,

Motus

Re: Ipod Touch - how does it work?

A lot of places have free wifi, starbucks for instance, some other cafes and probably most of his friends houses. Some apps cost money, but apart from this using skype etc on the ipod touch is free.

Correct: ipod touch isn't a phone/doesn't work with a wireless operator and so will work and only work when in range of an accessible wifi signal, anywhere in the world. Doesn't matter where it's bought (apart from the plug).

Best thing for a parent -- you can lock "certain" things on it. Good ol' Steve tries to make the world a better place...

Also you will have to set up an itunes account with a password and a credit card. A lot of apps are free but some are pay apps and you might get an unpleasant surprise at the end of the month.

There have been stories of kids buying very expensive law school texts on their iphone by accident!

A credit card isn't necessary, you can fund it with iTunes gift cards and gift certificates. That's how I fund my US iTunes account without a US credit card. Offers a lot more control, especially with kids.

Re: Ipod Touch - how does it work?

The iPod Touch rocks! It's essentially an iPhone without a phone - though it will run Sype and VoiP...
