Parenting Fail

My sweet daughter turned 14 today.

As we finished packing all of our worldly goods for our upcoming relocation to CH and moved out of our old house within the last week, our family of 5 is currently residing in a hotel since school is not out yet. In the midst of the chaos of sharing one bathroom in the morning and trying to get everyone down to the "continental" breakfast before the blueberry muffins were all gone, it completely slipped my husband's and my mind that today is her birthday. Making it even worse, I was reminded of the fact by my smirking 16-year-old son, who is typically the absolute worst about remembering anything remotely important, be it homework that is due, feeding the dog, or Mother's Day!

I hugged her, wished her a happy birthday, and apologized profusely. In the end she was not even upset, which made my oversight seem even more tragic because it didn't trigger an overload of teenage anger or drama!

Anyone else drop the parenting "ball" lately?

Oh, that's a bad one. But she should be able to milk it for years to come.

The only thing that puzzles me, is that my girls start planning for their birthdays months ahead... the chances of us forgetting are very remote.

Re: Parenting Fail

Maybe with all the stress and upheaval she sort of forgot her own birthday, or at least it was relegated to a lower priority than would be normal. At least the guilt your feeling will cause you to make it up to her big time, and I guess she knows that

I've actully forgotton my own birthday quite a number of times, only to be reminded by a phone call from my mum. Thankfully I've never forgotten her's anybody else's.

I feel guilty we were all geared up for the pool in recent temps over 27/28 deg just to have this crazy cold of the last 2 days, and there was snow at St Cergue apparently, as the baker told me this morning.

So, I have this "I am all packed for the pool" thing every single second from my little one. Thankgod for thermal pools here.

my mom always messed it up by calling 1 day earlier. I'd like to think it was my brother's or sister's fault, but im an only child so...

Yes, I owe a lot for this one. I need to make sure I make the time for the payoff shopping trip to take place at the local mall here in the states rather than Swiss shops after we move!

I forgot my own birthday this week. It is my father, friends on FB and people on this forum who reminded it to me.

That just sounds typically male- nothing to be overly upset about..

There are so many things on that missing part of the Y chromosome, that would make it an X, it is just one of the things one accepts

I dont think my husband has ever remembered any of our kids birthdays, except the eldest, who like in NotAllThere case, would never let us.

I think that forgetting your own birthday is probably a requisite part of being a mom, you know? If being focused on tending to others' needs (especially very new, tiny and needy others, like yours ) on a daily basis can make us forget to brush our teeth, it certainly would have the ability to make us forget our own birthday! If only we could just skip adding a year to the number as well.....

My fail was that I, her mom, forgot it as well. So much for my getting to remind all the slackers in the family of her special day......

I have been advised by a very reliable source that it is actually the mother who should be receiving at least half the glory and presents on the childs birthday, as they did half the work(!!!)
