Re: Summer in Prague - beware of pickpockets/robbers, Malkovich just robbed.

Here is a RIP Bohemian Bagel at Ujezd. I think the rent must have been horrendous there.

I don't mind the one at Masna, since there is a terrace, and a little play corner for kids which my mini MC loves, you can nurse there, have a kiddo play when older, there is a climbing wall for kids, balls, table with crayons, slide, all beat but fun.

Karlstejn is really nice, we used to take our summer students there for a field trip, next destination was Cesky Krumlov (did you boat there? you can rent boats and tractor tyres to float on, some of our students were too heavy, though, , made me worried, the tyres were all in the water it was only their shoulders up), next destination was not so happy, the concentration camp Terezin. The sand formation rocks are great, there are many nice places, like Slapy, the water dam, Karlovy Vary....All the summer festivals. I used to walk a lot in Prague, kinda miss it here. It was about 10km every day, it is a huge city and everyone walks.

The reason why I am posting is a recent robbery, even John Malkovich got robbed in a good hotel a few days ago.

god. poor john malkovich. first bernie madoff robbed him now this. why does all the bad stuff happen to good people.

ot- haven't been there since i was 19, but having a good friend here who is czech has made my son an addict of those kolonada wafers, so i have a feeling we will have to go soon .

either way good to have a heads up, thanks for that!

I don't know, MusicChick, yet Prague is the city where the taxi driver of the taxi I used in the last day there returned my laptop bag with valuables and the taxi company called from his behalf to meet me at the airport (as I didn't go there directly, I said I still had some time before my plane took off) as soons as he realized I forgot it there, and that was before I myself realized I was missing something .

As for the pickpockets, it is a question of common sense..me thinks.
That's so nice to hear!

Not all the taxis are bad, a minority, it's only when a cab is over 600crowns I would worry, as a foreigner.

I feel so bad for him, chances are they didn't even know who they were robbing.

The spa wafers are lovely, so addictive. If you want some and I will be there soon, let me know. It's a little tough to import them in one piece but even in pieces they are nice.

Thanks MC, for the RIP link for BOhemian Bgle - I have forwarded it on to several friends. AS of 2010, it was still empty - no sign of being turned into a hotel or anything else. very sad.

Prague will always be a beautiful city - but I have to say my first visit in 91 when I stayed with a teacher there was just fabulous- as you say MusicChick, between old and new times. Such a shame the place is now full of MacDonalds, Mexican, French, etc, etc, restaurants. All the real shops have gone to be replaced with souvenirs shops, etc. I hope it will never lose its soul.

I saw "Being John Malkovich" at a Prague cinema - the cinema was set up with tables and chairs, so people could sit around in groups, with their drinks, whilst watching the movies. I thought that was a great idea.

Re: Summer in Prague - beware of pickpockets/robbers, Malkovich just robbed.

First timers to Praha might want to join a free walking tour:

http://www.newpraguetours.com/daily-...free-tour.html

I use it the last time and found it interesting. Took the 2pm tour, as I didn't want to miss the changing of guards ceremony at noon at the Praha Castle ( via Tram 22 ) which I went by myself.

Tour covers:

• Old Town Square
• St. Nicolas’ Church
• Church of Our Lady before Tyn
• Kinsky Palace
• Statue of Jan Hus
• House of the Black Madonna &
• Museum of Cubisim
• Powder Tower
• Art Nouveau Municipal House
• Czech National Bank
• Wenceslas Square
• Estates Theatre (First Mozart Performance)
• Astronomical Clock
• Kafka Statue
• Maiselova Street & Old Jewish Quarter
• Rudolfinum – Czech Philharmonic
• Prague Castle & St. Vitus [ I went earlier privately ]
• Karlov Most – Charles Bridge
• WWII – Prague Uprising

Quote:
Visitors to Castle Hill love to watch the changing of the guard - which happens every hour, on the hour. At 12 noon, it's possible to watch a special flag ceremony during the changing of the guards.
Walking over the uneven cobblestones can be difficult - get a good pair of walking shoes!

Avoid changing currency - you'll likely get scammed, especially by the fine print and get very unfavourable rates - most exists in tourist spots and as tourist traps. The police cannot do anything - caveat emptor. I found it better to change it in CH to CZ Crowns and pay only in their local currency.

It's true, loads of fast food joints, but they do come and go, too. I like Indian fast food, Himalaya near Pavlak is superb.

Which one was it? I was usually too busy for flicks, but there is a really good scene for indie films, plus the festival of Human Rights movies, One World, is great.

The comment on scams while changing currency is spot on. Change in a bank, any bank, but a bank. Not in those Change joints, the commission is horrendous there. They will tell ya zero commission, but will give you a terrible exchange rate.

For those heading to Prague, rent a boat on Vltava, you can from the Islands in the river. Get a bottle of whine and a paddle boat, very nice.

Cobble stones are fine. You kill shoes in 2-3 months, true, but walking on them is ok, just have to look where you are stepping.
