Summer in Prague - beware of pickpockets/robbers, Malkovich just robbed.

As much as it pains me to post this, people - if you are planning trips to my capital city, watch out for your belongings. Summer is here, Prague is one of the frequent affordable destinations.

If you travel, take a travel insurance, make sure you stay at a good hotel (use their safes) and watch out for pickpockets. They are so good BBC made a documentary about these gangs a few years ago, they have whole theatrical shticks put together, including people looking like tourists, families, kids thrown at you, etc.

The reason why I am posting is a recent robbery, even John Malkovich got robbed in a good hotel a few days ago.

Here is a debate over how things usually happen (they mostly operate on trams, subways, buses, touristic areas).

Prague is stunning, but the pickpockets and other petty crime is a major nuisance. It never happened to me, but one has to stay cautious, locked back pack on your belly, never carry your passport with you, cells and wallets not in back pockets, if you have a netbook, I phone, secure it. These bastids managed to cut out a netbook from my brother's backpack without him knowing it.

Makes me appreciate the fact I don't have to go purse/backpack/briefcase shopping here with having some major security issues on my mind. Just how pretty is looks and how many fat books it can take.

Both. Unies at both places, work and school. It's hot there these days.
Pickpockets on long distant trains as well, caution caution.

Thanks for the warning! Prague is a city that I've been wanting to visit for a very long time. I've had many people tell me that it's the most beautiful city in Europe they've ever seen.

It's quite amazing there. People don't have so much, but there is a community spirit, spunk, common sense and warmth. Very chill, musical and literary.

On my previous trip, I got a Praha Tageskarte ( 24h ) for CZ100. I was wondering if you knew if I could use it tomorrow ( unsure if the ticket/ pass I bought was valid only for that day ).

You should go see, there are cheap flights if you book early, trains, buses that take you there over night.

If you go, watch out for pickpockets and taxi drivers, otherwise it is really a cool spot for destination, especially in summer, so much fun going on.

Cost me EUR30 one way Konstanz to Praha, and another EUR30 Praha to Schaffhausen - both on DBahn.

Re: Summer in Prague - beware of pickpockets/robbers, Malkovich just robbed.

Hush, naysayers. It's gets skanky in certain district or two, but it's easy to avoid, if somebody is pressing against you, just run, or push away hard. I never got mugged there. But I had a large bass with me at all times, so they were probably afraid of getting whacked.

You are getting me all nostalgic, I am going to start singing our national anthem... Kdeeeeeee doooomooooov muuuuujjjjj

It definitely is a lot cheaper than in ZU. If you keep your wits with you, nothing happens. It's lovely to hang around the sights, the castle, Jewish cemetery, the Charles bridge, then eat some fun food at some local place, then hang at clubs and bars, especially the odd uni nerd ones, they have artists from all over the world performing, poetry slams, crazy gigs, galleries...

Like this one, K4, at Celetna, last time I was in Prague I saw a noise performer from NZ who ended up on our couch later in Vaud, since he was on the tour anyways and played in Geneva few days later, hahaha, it was great! He taught mini MC how to say in proper NZ accent "now, it's time to go to bid".

That ticket is valid unless you stamped it last time.

It is valid for 24 hours from the time you validate it (stamp it) in the yellow little box right at the top of the subway escalators/entrance or inside the bus/tram.

THe 24 hour card runs for 24 hours from when it is validated. ie: the first time you use it on bus, tram or metro, you stick it in the ticket machine ( entrance to all the metro stations, and on the buses and trams. So if you did not validate yours, you can use it this time.

I loved living in Prague - the view over the city from Petrin hill, looks great in any season, the architecture, music, galleries and theatres are superb - the three main theatres are worth visiting even if you are not into opera/ballet.

There used to be a joke about the pick pocketers "It seems that eveyone living in Prague can recognise them, except the police. " I once read some statistics on the average amount that was picked per tourist, per day and I figure those lightfingered gangs must all be serious millionaires by now. Heed the advice from Music Chick, and then enjoy your time in a lovely city.

I only paid a visit to Prague once and that was in 1991 . Among the specialties was the fact that I had two excellent restaurants near to the hotel on Wenzel....., which however only could serve about half of the meals on their menu (still a lot actually and excellent ! ), that shops tended to be half empty, so that I in case of a lonesome bottle of Coca Cola decided NOT to buy it in the hope that a local could pick it ! Prague however is a splendid city and one of the most beautiful in Europe. The heaps of tourists however of course result in crooks flocking there and trying to cash-in.

I on visits to Budapest had been warned about pickpockets etc, but neither there nor in Prague ever encountered any problem

Thanks for the confirmation - I didn't have time to validate it the last time and hence ought to be able to validate this time around and use it.

Not bad not bad..

Ruce pryč, ty gaunere! hands off, you creep!

Kolik to stojí? how much is it?

Nemáte náhodou gulášek s knedlíčky? Do you happen to have goulash with dumplings? (affectionate)

Pivečko? beer? (affectionate)

Klobásku? wurst? (affectionate), we are very affectionate about food, beer, etc. it's a joke too, the sense of humor is quite different than here.

Biff lived in Praha? Awesome. Petrin is amazing, did you go to Bohemian Bagel at Ujezd? That weird little trafika with funny postcards, or the little blue collar bar right next to Bohemian Bagel, ooooooh. There is also the best sheet music store right the opposite. Cherries must be ripe in Petrin park.

1991 was a fab year, Wolli between new and old times. Good spirit. The tourists are coming in giant waves, which attract the pickpockets from the entire Europe it seems.

It is still fun there. If you guys can see classical music, I know they do Sunday free organ gigs at Svaty Jakub Church, at 9am I think it is. Very nice.

I don't know, MusicChick, yet Prague is the city where the taxi driver of the taxi I used in the last day there returned my laptop bag with valuables and the taxi company called from his behalf to meet me at the airport (as I didn't go there directly, I said I still had some time before my plane took off) as soons as he realized I forgot it there, and that was before I myself realized I was missing something .

As for the pickpockets, it is a question of common sense..me thinks.

I practically lived in BB at Ujezt, Music Chick! Why on earth did it close down? The one behind the Tyn church just doesn't have the same atmosphere, sssiiiiiggghhhh. ( still a great place for bottomless coffee though)

OUtside Prague, my favourite places are the forests behind Karlstein castle, Cesky Krumlov ( especially the 3rd weekend in JUne each year, when the "roses" festival is on and the whole town dresses in period costume; and one of my most favourite places in the world is Teplice nad Matuji Skali, where I stay in the only little hostel inside the National reserve, go cycling and regularly walk amongst those awesome, towering sandstone formations. Paradise! (no pickpockets there)
