| | Why you can't win an argument on the internet This post made me think of threads on EF
It's a bit long, so for a shorter version, click here.
*I wasn't sure whether to post this in off-topic or here, but since it is related to forum life, I thought it might be more appropriate in this section.*

Reason: EDIT - I guess it's off topic now... This is debatable... but I won't go there.

Internet arguments are no more made for winning than pub arguments are.
That's why they're so much fun. If we ever got the bottom of anything, what would we have to talk about?
Anyway, you're wrong, and here's a link which proves it. |

In short : "we have a tendency to believe things even more when our beliefs are challenged."
As Monty Phython would have said: "no we don't."
What I love/hate about this forum is that people offer advice on things they clearly know nothing about. It's especially true with respect to economics:
1) Quotes - There are no rules, so people do what they want, but they should be quoting some recent statistics so that their arguments bare some resemblance to reality. I would also like to see some references to recent published articles. Not just "XYZ is worse than the US."
2) Hijacking - some people take every chance to change a discussion into UK versus Switzerland. For me, the moderators should step in and delete their posts when they begin to hijack a discussion.
3) Multiple posts - some people offer multiple posts if they feel that their post is not being accepted, so instead of a discussion, you got a monologue
4) Long-winded posts - some people....
5) Gems - but between all the BS, you find little nuggets of quality humour (intented and otherwise). Sadly, none here... |

Great post, OP, made me think.
Debates are great, wherever they are.
For that one needs to accept certain similar mindset, to not resort to cheap shots and other personal crap, and shouldn't count on being supported by buddies or (hours of Googling to "prove somebody wrong" and fish out some links) just like it does not really matter in a face to face discussion.
Egos are sometimes in the way of constructive talk, too bad, or in the way just walking away.
So, I'd say...where is the love, peoples. Let's cultivate that online and offline
We do have some really nice talks here, clever, helpful and humane, it's very enjoyable.
