Buggerit! Spent my lucky coin

Inadvertently spent my 1909 20 Rp coin in Co-op at lunchtime. Bloody gutted I am, was keeping it as a kind of good-luck charm. Would have felt pretty stupid going back to the checkout girl to ask for it back, she probably would have thought I was off my head or something. No change there then (excuse the pun).

Never put all your coins in the same wallet.

You've passed on your luck to someone else.

That deserves a smile of satisfaction, surely?

They're not that rare. Every time I find a coin that's pre circa 1950 I drop it in a jam jar and the jar is now almost half full. My oldest is an 1899 20Rp. The coins are mostly all 10 and 20Rp but bigger values will occasionally crop up too, including a pair of early 1930s 5 Frank coins, made of silver and worth about 40 Franks each according to Ebay.

So always check your change. It can be worth it.

I would have defo swallowed my pride and gone back to get it if it meant that much to me- not too late perhaps?

reminds me of that old thread where we discussed the monetary value of old coins... (amongst other things)

And then Mimi brought this website to our attention.

She, or someone near her, probably has their own lucky coin and would only think you're daft due to the fact you managed to accidentally spend it. We went into a coin shop, bought something, and they insisted we look through their stash of 1 and 2 rapp coins to find special years (birth, wedding, etc.).

Yes. No. Maybe.

Actually, no. Was just the oldest coin I'd ever posessed. Thought it was kind of cool to have a coin over a century old.

Nah ..... you're best rid of it - it probably still had traces of the great flu epidemic virus on it.

Possibly, I wonder if post WW1 peeps had a penchant for putting coins up their noses like we do? Don't we?

Maybe not everyone ... eh?

Anyway, a coin that old makes you wonder ..... how many deadmens' pockets has it been in? ..... how many journeys through the intestinal tract has it made? ..... to name but two possible scenarios.

That's what fascinates me the most (not the intestinal tract bit), for what has it been used to buy, sell, blackmail and bribe in its 102 year history?
