Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

I understand that contact with friends from The Old Country diminishes in quality over distance and time. But chain mail is one thing that really gets on my wick. Does anyone have thoughts about how to deal with chain mailers?
Disambiguation: Not manufacturers of mediaeval battledress.
Those infuriating emails from contacts sending you an angel or cute kitten or friendship circle, along with a threat.
They look like this –

Fwd: fwd: fwd:
“Because you have touched my life, I want to send you this intensely annoying piece of horse’s ordure. PLEASE PASS IT ON. And send it back to me too, if you care for me at all and if you don’t, you will prove my suspicions that you are a churlish old sow. If you pass it on to twelve people in four days, something wonderful will happen. You’re gonna get love, money, success and you will find the remote!!!!
DO NOT BREAK THE CHAIN! Tammy did. One week later, she lost a buttock. Lula did. Next month, she went feral. Jake did. Overnight, his brand-new bride turned into a herd of Highland Cows. I send you this with my love. You’re so special.”

Obviously, I know what to do with the email. But how does one tactfully suggest to these people, some of whom I actually like, that I don’t want to receive this steaming pile of esoteric sewage?
Any ideas?

What do you do?

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

I just delete the emails. Luckily I don't seem to be friends with anyone who does that kind of thing. Facebook is another matter; however I find a public sarcastic put down does wonders. They either stop doing it or defriend me.

xxx has sent you a flufly little kitten because she loves you! Please consider sending her something back!

AdrianLondon wites: "Thanks! Went great on the BBQ".

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Thankfully I've not had one of these for a very long time and long may that continue...

I agree, these often come from people we really like and care about so tact and diplomacy are called for.

What has worked for me is that I've ever so sweetly given my thanks for being thought of in this way but as I do not believe in any of it and will not be forwarding the message on, then perhaps best to not include me on any such mailings in the future as that would be a waste of the power, magic, threat, curse, whatever.

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Sometimes I've even responded with something like:

"I just wanted to let you know that you should be careful about sending these chain mails out, because they can be used as a way for spammers and hackers to obtain email addresses."

(I'm not entirely sure if that's even true, but I did read that once).

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Would you consider sending them a kindly worded message along the lines: Where can I unsubscribe?
You could also set a filter so these messages arrive in the junk folder and not in the inbox. My method isn't so tactful as I tend to delete chain mails.

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Logically speaking, a certain amount of people (more than 50%?) must believe in the mystic qualities of chain mail, or otherwise think that they do not want to 'miss out' or 'be the one who gets cursed'. If not, chain mails would never be forwarded and would have fallen by the wayside a long time ago.

I suppose they prey on basic human instincts of wanting to believe that there is something more powerful around which we do not understand.

Complete and utter garbage!

I just ignore them (and haven't been knowingly cursed yet..)

I especially like the ones that come with a preface... I usually don't send these sorts of things out, but this one really touched me.

I want to say "stop that, you'll go blind"

But alas, I'm usually a bit of a wimp in this regard and I just ignore them. Speaking of these annoying things, I've not had one in a while.

Hallelujah.

Good news - chain mail (Kettenbriefe) is illegal in Switzerland! Well, the hardcopy kind is anyway and someone that stupid will never know how to check whether it's true or not for e-mail...

I only have one friend who does this and you'd really hate it as she sends an extraordinary quantity of them. She must be in a cult.

Honestly, I just delete them. She likes sending them so why bother hurting her feelings? Hit delete, easy peasy. She's never asked "so what did you think of the last one I sent?" and like Itti, the sky here hasn't fallen yet.

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Ladies, just recently I received a chain letter and it did not require a donation. It read: "This letter was started by a woman like yourself in the hope of bringing relief to other tired and discontented women. Just bundle up your husband or boyfriend and send him to the woman whose name appears at the top of the list. Then add your name to the bottom of the list and send a copy of this letter to five of your friends who are equally tired and discontented. When your name comes to the top of the list, you will receive 3,125 men -- and one of them is bound to be better than the one you gave up...."

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

I usually just delete them but from time to time I have replied saying "You do realise that you'll get 7 years bad luck for forwarding on these chain mails?"

If they're superstitious enough to feel they need to forward them, that usually puts them in a muck sweat

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Thank you for this thread. Right now, I'm going through a bad luck phase and now I know why. Darn it, I should never have deleted all those chain letters.

Note to me: it's not the chain letters!

Second note to me: Maybe it is. Time to rectify it. See below.

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

The ones that make me smile are the "virus warnings" that worried uncle and aunts mass mail out. A little education (i.e. pointing them to Symantec's search function) has reduced these emails to nothing.

Stupid sob stories about poor Naomi wanting to spread a message of love and hope, aged 10 and dying of cancer, and those offering a free computer if you email so-and-so at HP get deleted. Usually with a message to the originator. Haven't had one in a while...

Re: Out of Sight, Out of Their Minds

Because you have touched my life, I want to send you this lovely message of love. PLEASE GIVE ME GREEN BLOBS as a token of your appreciation. If you don’t, you will become a victim of EF's internal mobbing society and your life will be miserable forever.

DO NOT IGNORE THIS WARNING! Tammy did. One week later, she received two red blobs. Lula did. Next month, she was banned from EF. Jake did and was fed to the EF trolls. You’re so special so please pass on those green blobs and your life will be blessed with EF love for the next seven years.
