Lake Como, Italy

Hi, my family of 3 (myself, husband, & 2 yr old) will be going to Lake Como this july.

Anyone have any recommendations of best part of the lake to stay or any good hotel recommendations? would love to stay near a decent beach.

Thanks!
jen

Re: Lake Como, Italy

We were spent a couple of nights in Bellagio last week and highly recommend going there for a wander around as it's a beautiful place. There were too many other tourists in the main town for our tastes but just a Km or so away from the town center and the only other people around seemed to be the locals. The hotel we ended up staying in was our second choice and was alright but the beds were like stone so won't name it, however, the place we wanted to stay as our first choice was the Hotel Pergola (unfortunately no triple rooms available when we went) and when we went to that side of the peninsular, it really did look idylic and we'd definitely want to try to stay there if we go back again.

Also, the village of Varenna looked stunning from the boat but we didn't have a chance to explore.

Hope you have a lovely time there!

Re: Lake Como, Italy

The only beaches I can think of are at the north end of the lake, mostly on the western shore.

At the south end it's all mountains running down to the lake edge, so not much in the way of beaches.

Personally, I'd go to Lake Garda.

Agree with Tom if you are looking for a beach holiday Garda is better but Como is more stunning. I don't really think the Italian lakes are beach holidays

Re: Lake Como, Italy

I don't know about beaches either. There are some shingle stretches and lidos where you can bathe in the lake (eg Varenna). Just google "Lake Como Lido") for a list. But you don't go to Lake Como for beaches. You go for the breathtaking fusion of lake and mountains with constantly shifting views. In some places it's like the fjords. But do go to Bellagio. Love it or hate its touristy cobbled alleyways, it has stunning views of the lake. Reserve a table for lunch on the terrace of the Hotel du Lac and order a glass or two of Prosecco. That's what we did. If you have a car, Lugano is within easy reach too.
