Slow encryption on a PC...ZZZzzz...

Got a new USB3 3TB external drive, blindingly fast for large file backups.

As with all external drives, they should be encrypted if they hold personal data.
So off I go with Bitlocker, built in encryption with Windows 7. 30 minutes pass, 0.3% complete. One hour later, 0.7% complete.

6 days... 6 days to encrypt a drive... That's just pathetic.

/Rant off.

Re: Slow encryption on a PC...ZZZzzz...

nobody has 3tb of personal data. just make a smaller partition for the sensitive stuff.

unless of course you mean 'personal data' in which case you might want to buy a CPU which has hardware crypto support. although at only 6mb/s you have a bottleneck somewhere else - are you compressing at the same time?

Create a a container using Truecrpyt and store your most important stuff on it with encrypted keys + password, the rest can be un encrypted unless you need to later which you can create another container

Re: Slow encryption on a PC...ZZZzzz...

14 years worth of email, vids, pics...plus backup versioning etc etc. Add 9 or so VM's, 60 odd databases in MySQL, Oracle and SQL Server...Then add backups from family members laptops and PC's Total space 11.8 TB. 14 TB online. No bottleneck, all Bitlocker users reporting the same. I prefer Bitlocker due to the OS and shell integration. Tried the rest, too many dependancies. It's at 8.4% now...

I keep my porn in the cloud btw...

Tried it, x64 driver kept BSOD'ing. Too many conflicts with disk imaging software...
