A Few Goals achieved

I was thinking earlier on today, what have I achieved since I've been in Switzerland (Ok, I'm in Geneva so not technically CH.....)

Well, I've been here for 4 months, and in that four months we have achieved ;

finding a house with a garden and garage in Geneva
Getting daughter into local public school
Finding a nanny/home help
Buying a car
Getting resident permits
Found myself a decent job (came over for wife's work) and have been there exactly one month
Getting French lessons
Met neighbours (all seem jolly nice)
And last week, just walked into Tabac and without 'thinking' got some smokes in French..... (have always had to 'change gear' into the language)

With the conversations I've had with people, they've all said that that's quite impressive going. Now I'm not blowing my/our own trumpets, but it made me feel quite proud, new country, language issues etc..,

What great achievements did other EF's feel in their early days in CH?

Hey give a man a chance!!! It is on the to do list, was going to be last year, but what with other things going on, it's been put off until I'm far less stressed!

I just wish I could get a grip of the language, I know it'll get there, and I'm hoping that I'll all get there, although it was quite amusing today when we had a team lunch, the team were all speaking about something in French and the waiter was asking me what I'd like, 'I'll have the onglet', 'How would you like it', Medium please'

They we like - you said you didn't speak French, I replied, I don't I just ordered a medium steak!!!!!

Re: A Few Goals acheived

LOL, I know, thanks - it's just something which I personally am disappointed with, I know I've got to give up, but I can need to be in the right frame of mind - and everything was working so well for that at the start of last year - but well, not quite ready for giving up the smokes yet!

And it doesn't help that most of Geneva smokes either!!!!

Grrrr - is that a moan??? At myself?

Re: A Few Goals achieved

Blow your own trumpets, tut your own horns, brag all you want since that totally deserves it!

Get a spell check, though, too, while you are at it. I gota get mine reinstalled here, so get your typos..

What have I achieved...had a baby! The biggest achievement of all, hahaha. Got a job in one day, and a few more. Finally got into the nuances of French, when I started to think I was a dyslectic in French.

I think being in Geneva, it is not an impossible thing to do, things are quite foreign friendly here.

Kudos!

That's probably what most people are impressed by.

The rest is all stuff you have to do anyway, if you see what I mean.

I know of people who've been in Geneva for years and are still looking. Indeed, a lawyer for the ASLOCA (mitverband) has been looking for 4 years...

Re: A Few Goals achieved

Sorry for the typo, I'm can't spell in English so goodness only know what my French will be like!

I have to admit that I was, lets say, apprehensive about the move. Not worried, but I was so used to the London job market, was a 'known' in the area I worked in and could go anywhere knowing I'd know someone or heard of someone, and here................

Language, culture (so not the 'Swiss' I've heard of - only last night someone was mowing their lawn at 8pm!!) although as I've said before, and if I am wrong please put be right, I gather that Geneva is only Swiss because of history!

Before we moved, I made a decision to never look at the negative posts/opinions and just move with an open mind - well out of my comfort zone, and only tonight, with a little party with some people who are building some new houses round the corner from us, I was talking to someone, their husband didn't speak English, but (and I was sort of having a conversation), but I found myself speaking in French - badly, but as I knew he didn't understand English it was, worked in Paris for about a year over 7 years, 10 weekends a year for 7 years, Berlin 8 weekends for 3 years - he was so thrilled that although it wasn't a conversation more of a list, but he could see that I wasn't an 'English neighbour' but someone who is trying to fit in and wants to have a go!

Oops that sounds really poncy in retrospect, but it was, again an achievement, little steps on a (hopefully) great journey here............

Just found out we are moving to Switzerland from Texas . I hope to have some accomplishments before returning in a few years to the states. Right now, everything is soooo overwhelming.

Congrats, now work on getting rid of the smokes

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", or, perhaps more appropriate in your context, "Petit petit l'oiseau fait son nid"

Whichever quotation you prefer, congratulations on an excellent start!

Re: A Few Goals achieved

thanks to everyone, but we did have a head start, we did live in London........ I still to this day see the look on the 'relocation specialist' face when I'd turn up with a list as long as your arm, and go 'I've found these.............

Sometimes being an in your face Londoner and just expecting things to happen works.

Switzerland is only Switzerland because of history, Geneva is part of Switzerland, my children are growing up here and will become Swiss Citizens. Forget what the Zurich people say, Geneva is part of Switzerland there is no technicality about it.

Great life here and glad you are settling in so well.

Re: A Few Goals achieved

Congrats !!!

You really did have a great start. Not everyone can say this.

I personally have the greatest respect for people leaving their country, settling somewhere else and get the life they want, e.g. finding a nice job, a roof over the head, friends etc.

When I did all the above I was in my 20s and absolutely carefree. I'm not sure if I could do it again. The move back to Switzerland was sort of a "coming home", although I did not live most of my life here. And I do speak the language, which really makes it easier.
