American TV in Germany

Hi,

Question for a friend who has recently moved over to the German/Swiss border from the States.

She wants to get American TV but unsure how to do it. She is just over the border in Germany but I would have thought the process, if there is any would be the same regardless which country you are living in.

Ta for any pointers.

Di

Re: American TV in Germany

I am using www.vpnaccounts.com and iTunes to get my entertainment.

Eventually, I hope to make the jump to watching my stories in dubbed German.

Re: American TV in Germany

I use http://www.unblock-us.com. It's a site that created a VPN that gives the facade that you that has a US ip address. I then use that to get access to netflix (for shows/some new but mainly 2 year old movies), hululu (new episodes of US tv that are released) and Amazon unbox (rent new movies that are released to DVD) - It goes through your computer, but with the right hook-up you can use your computer to connect it to you TV and bam, you have everything you need. (I use an xbox which means I don't have to connect the computer)

Netflix, Hululu and others do cost a small fee but honestly I'm thinking about cancelling my high end cable to just my internet because everything I watch, I get through these channels.

This is definitely the short version of the hook-up process, PM if you need any help.

Re: American TV in Germany

The best solution for tv in Germany is to find all of the streaming sites and hit those up because there aren't many choices unless you want to learn German. I use projectfreetv, and veehd for my entertainment purposes. As for english on German tv, there is MTV, CNN, BBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, but Mtv can get dull after a while, and the news sites are...well...news sites. Apparently there are other more expensive ways but I dont them as im cheap....

If you are looking for US tv and some UK, this is a useful resource

tv.blinkx.com

Sort of a tv series search engine. It indexes tv series by season and episode and lists places where you can find them. There are several sites where people have uploaded episodes and you can either stream or download. Fairly accurate and up to date, not perfect.

Some of the sites work best if you have a subscription to the site - I usually get subscriptions for 3 months at a time and download. The quality is ok, sometimes better than others. Current series usually have an upload a week after airing.

The subscriptions run between $15 and €20. it is less expensive for a year($50 to €50) but I'm comparing various sites, such as videobb.com, megaupload.com and putlocker.com

Also to download, I use jdownloader, totally free.

Is this similar to UnoTelly http://www.unotelly.com?

I'm using it for Hulu in Zurich right now and so far no complaint.

Re: American TV in Germany

Seems like UnoTelly provides a software that while running uses the VPN to open up particular sites based on your subscription (so it looks like if you are only using it to watch US shows through internet and their corresponding websites, this could be a way to go) - Unblock-us.com provides a ip address that you set up on your computer so you don't have any restrictions on your ip address which allows me to also watch netflix & Hulu on my Xbox so I can stream my shows directly through my TV.

You could also stream your computer through your TV's if you have the right hook-ups too, so both work, depending on what shows you want and what device you want them to work on.
