Walking off the weight?

Do you think it is possible? Let's say someone walk an hour per day?

What do you think? Any advices, experts comments?

Weight loss is basically like accounting. If you consume more than your intake, you naturally loose weight...more exercise and a balanced diet (along with not eating anything after 6pm) should do the trick IMO.

Re: Walking off the weight?

I think it is possible if you do it at a quick pace. A daily walk will lose some calories so if you can cut back on your food intake, it must help.
Pushing a pram/buggy will help shape up your arms too....

Re: Walking off the weight?

Are you talking about that pro-walking thing that people do when they wiggle their hips around or just regular walking?

Regular walking. You know the kind you do when visiting a town but on a regular basis?

If we take my case, it is walking everyday (almost) 2-3-4 hours around town.

Yes Nil, I know it is possible. I did it.
Walking is more beneficial for losing weight, and not damaging to ligaments and joints, and will not shift fat into muscle, but streamline the body shape.

Half an hour a day is enough, if the walking is brisk.
Slow strolling is not going to burn up calories.
And every day is also not neccessary ...... every 2nd day is better ... giving the muscles a day of rest, and not "burning out" to make the walking boring.

When one is used to the brisk pace, and at risk of getting boring, then a bit of light jogging interspersed will burn up more fat, without injuring anything.

An hour walking will only burn off the same amount of calories as a big coffee with milk or a can of cola. Better is 40-50 mins 3-4 times a week with your heart rate at 150-160 bpm.

Thanks for your input.

Brisk walking is the same as speed walking right? I am getting there, I was speed walking every single hill without losing a beat in Istanbul. I lost 13 kilos in 1 year.

How much did you lose if I can ask?

I am now just walking around, most of the time having my 5 4-5 kilos baby in the sling, or pushing the stroller. I will slowly increase the speed to go back to speed walking. And hopefully I'll soon enough reach a speed where I'll just switch to jogging without too much difficulties.

Aha. Well in that case, I can help . I walked a lot after I had my daughter and my son as I did not have the time or the means to do any other exercise (yeah, finding a baby sitter for 1 hour while I jog is just not gonna happen!) and managed to get rid of my pregnancy weight by just doing that and using Mr. LiB's calorie equation

You can get a 'watch' that monitors your heart rate. The more you stress your body with exercise the more calories you will bern. Wearing small weights on your wrists will make it harder!

For Mr. Lib's equation, I am there since a long time. But it seems like even by not eating much, I can't manage to lose. I am so full of water, nothing get rid of it.

I didn't weight myself since we moved and we are still in our temporary apartment so I don't have my scale to see if I lost or not. I do know I have one pair of jeans that I fit in (still a bit tight but at least I can get in!) So I guess I must have lost some.

I count calories.

2 slices of whole grains bread: 119
2 slices of cheese: 50
3 slices of sandwich chicken meat: 24

etc...

I don't eat more than 1400 calories a day for sure (I don't even reach that).

Plus the walking, plus the sweating, etc.

PS: I should add that soon we will have our apartment AND an crosstrainer machine for cardio.

Girlfriend of mine when she had her first kid lost all of her baby weight. She wasn't a big exerciser and swore she lost it all because of breast feeding.

By subtracting ones age from 220, you'll get the aerobic base rate for your heart. This is the rate at which you'll burn the most calories when working out. If you work out at maximum heart rate, you burn a significantly lower amount of calories.

She was one of the small percentage of women that have the chance to lose it that way. But hormones are not all kind to all women. In my case, I didn't shed the weight off because of the breastfeeding. Not an once.

Ok, if you slightly decrease your food intake & increase your exercise the weight will fall off. If you can build up to an hour a day on the crosstrainer it won't take long & you will feel & look fantastic.

I was about 75kg and took about a year to work down to 62kg (height 1,73), that was 20 years ago (eehhhh time flies!) ... have inched up to 64 in that time, but continue to walk 3 times a week, a fast no-nonsense walk. I love to eat so I have to excercise!

A year is a good pace to work off excess fat. The slower it takes, the better the body adjusts, without the yo-yo effect of dieting.

Carrying a baby is the same as a soldier doing pack-drill!!!! Be careful of your back and hips! especially after having a baby when your body is re-adjusting itself! Better to use the stroller!

I was a dancer, so used that basic training in my walking ...... concentrating on "rolling" over from toes/insteps/heels, then concentrating on leg muscles, then hip swing movement, then posture, then tensing arm/shoulder muscles to keep a good rythm, keeping head high ....... and trying to incorporate it all into habit which is impossible but keeps the mind occupied - and the body working! And before you know it you`re back home again - all sweaty and feeling virtuous!

keep it that way, don't get a scale!. Especially if you are retaining water, it's not going to give you an accurate representation of exactly how much weight you are losing. Just go by how your clothing fits and how you feel.

And what about those walking shoes with the curve sole? Any experience with them? Apparently it ''suppose'' the shape up the behind!
