European Toll Roads

Good morning,

I will be driving in both France and Spain this summer and would like to find a quick way of paying for the toll roads without having to carry and count lots of cash. A colleague suggested I pay by credit card and says you simply need to put the card in the machine and the payment is made, you do NOT need to put in a pin code or anything does anyone know if this is correct?

Many thanks J

Re: European Toll Roads

I can't speak for Spain, but in France you stick your credit card in the slot (look for a big "CB" sign above the lane for "Carte Bancaire") and it spits it back out and opens the barrier. It takes just a couple of seconds.

Re: European Toll Roads

For France yes - don't know about Spain.

The other benefit is that there is rarely a queue at the peage stations on the left - usually lanes 2-3, furthest to the left are reserved for "CB", with lane 1 reserved for pre-paid passes...

Thats not correct for France. Experience May 2011 on A7, A9, A40, A41, A42, A43. Some times they accept credit cards and debit cards. Some times it is credit cards only, some times it is debit cards only. Neither card needed any pin.
