Re: Why I feel old today

That video of the children reminds me of the BBC4 series from a couple of years ago where they got a family to "live in the past" and use the technologies of the 70s, 80s and 90s for a few weeks.

The scariest episode for me was the one about the 1980s... I was already an adult with a full-time job, it still feels like yesterday, and yet the state of the art technology of the time looks incredibly dated now. I was working at the Department of the Environment in London in the early 80s, managing a budget with which we were buying Apple IIs that were being used to design government buildings. It's unbelieveable how far we have come in such a short period of time.

Re: Why I feel old today

Imagine trying to park a car that long today!

I am actually on various vehicle websites as we speak, researching new cars for my return to Oz in Sept. Hard work! I have no idea what to look at, the stuff they offer on new cars now wasn't invented when I bought my old Toyota!!!

Aww man, I remember my sister's high school sweetheart coming to pick her up in a Pinto Stationwagon that was that color. It would have been something like '86 or '87 so the car would have been a few years old - and looked it, but not too bad. What a nasty color though!

I wrote a building lighting power consumption analysis program for the Apple IIe.

Dual floppy (160k single sided?), Silent Type thermal printer, digital input card for data collection (from National Instruments? Did they exist back then?).

I always had a soft spot for Pintos. Even if they did have that small problem of exploding when hit from behind.

That orange wasn't such a bad color in the end. I once owned one of these, in this color combo:

Then again, I called it The Great Pumpkin (and we bought it on Halloween by coincidence)

National Instruments doesn't ring any bells, but I wasn't actually placing the orders or using the machines. I just remember having to write (by hand of course) endless notes to more senior people asking to buy "Apple IIe with VDU and printer".

That's another thing from the 80s that now seems very weird... office correspondence. Hand-write a note, take it to the typing pool, get it back typed up the next day, put it in the internal post to the office upstairs, possibly get an answer three days later. Mind you, the last bit hasn't changed much .

Well, you, see, we had to make typed copies using carbon-paper, which would then slip when you used an eraser (nearly said rubber!) so it all took quite a looooooooooong time.

You have to wonder how anything got done though... having said that, thinking of the office that I was in, not much did get done .
