Is 50k enough for me to live on (in the UK)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...es-luxury.html

Go figure. If you quarter the cost of your mortgage, you can go on more holidays and buy horses.

More gutter journalism from the dailymail

Aside from that...it's amazing how far 50k can take you even in the south. It's also amazing that families find that having a combined income of £50k in the UK has 'made it'

"About 40 per cent of the Sewells’ income goes on their mortgage" which, as interest rates are at a record low, means they're morons.

I think it depends on their mortgage. But if they are paying the capital part of their mortgage instead of buying horses then they aren't morons.

They are also no suitable for this gutter article.

40% of their income pays for their remortgaged - remortgaged - remortgaged - mortgage which they used to go on 3 holidays a year when the times were good.

They are morons not because they are using 40% of their income to pay the mortgage - but for believing the money was always going to flow from the their property!

It may not always be obvious, especially when reading about Afghanistan or some such, but there is a rule that *every* article in the Daily Mail has to relate to house prices, and how they are either going up (and the world is good) or they are going down (and it's the government's fault).

Corrected that for you...

So sorry I just read that the Sewells daughter's horse that she used to share with her friend died and they can't afford to allow their daughter to persue her expensive hobby! However the Sawlloways are taking delivery of a horse for their daughter soon! Poor children living in Surrey... my heart goes out to them...

PS: They couldn't have come up more confusing family names!

Re: Is 50k enough for me to live on (in the UK)

My favourite daily mail article involved an article about child brides in India. It was quite a sad story actually. I feel sympathy for the child brides since I am human.

The lulz happened in the comments section when all the readers went full retard with their anti Muslim sentiments. Then one learned reader pointing out that the people mentioned in the story were all Hindu. He had 1000 red thumbs down points

The DM is the drug for the ignorant who need a newspaper to reinforce their ill-perceived stereotypes and make them feel that they are hard working British/English (depending on the sport in question) Citizens. I of course only read it to remind myself why I should stay away...

It was rather lol'tastic when they interviewed Prince Harry at Silverstone and he commented that having two British drivers in the top ten for qualifying was great...when in fact there were 3...just Paul Di Resta is Scottish

It's Salloway not Sawlloway.
Got to have good old British names for Daily Mail readers otherwise the article wouldn't be taken seriously

Re: Is 50k enough for me to live on (in the UK)

Large pinch of salt and all that. I have a daughter who lives in Surrey, and it is true that house prices there have gone through the roof and continue to do so in some areas. Having lived in the East Midlands most of my adult life until recently, I can say that for the mortgage they have for a 4 bed house sufficiently near to a train station to commute to London, and with a good school- they could afford a stately home in the Midlands, and a Castle in Lincolnshire.

This is of course also true in CH. For the price of a 2-3 bed box on the gold coasts of Zurich or Geneva/Lausanne- you can still buy a huge place in other areas, and particularly in the Jura. People coming to CH tend to look at areas where taxes are low- and don't realise that in those areas rentals and property values + general cost of living, are much much higher.

Re: Is 50k enough for me to live on (in the UK)

I remember looking for work in the UK when I was in love with a Londoner (oh my gawd I was a dumb boy) and found that in order to maintain my comfortable standard of living, and due to the exchange rate, I was really going to have to sell myself (and I don't mean at Piccadilly Circus ...although, maybe... nah.)

Honestly it just seems odd that the Pound could be nearly 2:1 against the Dollar, and yet prices seem to translate at a ratio of 1:1. Of course that was 3 years ago so it's a bit different now... but still...
