I'm now thinking "door" but I suspect I'm getting further away from the truth (ROD is a type of staff, going upwards is DOR, around nothing is an extra O, so DOOR.)

But, there's nothing there to suggest it should be...

Grrr, i still don't understand why overall it is door - i can see rod = staff, and o = nothing, and mix means anagram of, but what does door have to do with the overall context of the clue?
