Re: I got my C-permit and found Marston's Pedigree on the same day!

Very nice indeed! Celebrating the C with a pint of Marston's Aley delights enjoying the view on the Glarner valley. Life could be worse, Glarner-Mensch!

Re: I got my C-permit and found Marston's Pedigree on the same day!

mmmmmmm........Marstons Pedigree discovered in one of the first real ale pubs in Newcastle in the early '80s, The Cooperage on the Quayside, best to be enjoyed with one of their home-made pickled eggs.....

Brings back a whiff of not only nostalgia........

Not sure if discovery of a much loved home treat is on the same scale as a new piece of bureaucratic gray plastic....but its seems to be a cause of congrats, so congrats

Quote:

Six years ago this Friday I arrived in Switzerland alone and miserable, having been dumped a week before by the woman for whom I had sold my house, given up my job and turned my life upside down. I knew nobody, apart from my ex-future-in-laws, wasn't sure what I was getting into with my new job (it was a nightmare, as it turned out), and was utterly lost in a foreign country where I hardly spoke the language, couldn't read the labels on bottles of floor cleaner without a dictionary, didn't understand how to do the simplest of things, like pay a bill, open a bank account or book an appointment with the doctor.

I was grateful that I'd washed up in Switzerland, instead of, say, Somalia or Afghanistan, but that was small comfort, really. My friends and family were a long way away and I was obliged to face the future alone in a foreign - albeit beautiful - country.

The first couple of years were dreadful. Bloody awful. There is little positive to say about those times.

My message is this: it does get better, sometimes. It takes a lot of luck, determination, bloody-mindedness and a bit more luck. But it is certainly not impossible to climb out of the pit and build a good life for yourself in Switzerland.

Here endeth the lesson.

Cheers,

DB
Sounds like Rudolf Steiner's "wiser man". According to Rudolf Steiner there is a "wiser man" in all of us (i.e. our subconscious), who leads us into situations and circumstances where we don't want to be and where we have to suffer a bit. Ultimately though and looking back we realise the wisdom of the way we were forced to go and acknowledge the fact that there was a reason for it and we have ended up where we were meant to be all along. Older, wiser, more compassionate perhaps and a step further advanced in our own personal evolutionary process. Bit like bad medicine.

Thought Marston's Pedigree was a dog food...

I sometimes wonder if there is a purpose to it all, but usually conclude that there isn't.

That misconception once led me on a wild goose chase round the back villages of Evia, looking for the mysterious shop which "sell Pendigree" (according to a well-meaning student), which turned out to be a pet food store.

I nearly cried. Thank goodness for tsipouro.

You should have saved this for your 9000th post or can we expect another big one?

Thanks for a great story, brightened up my day. Title said it all but only scratched the surface!

My post milestones are more a cause for embarrassment than celebration.

You're welcome: I was afraid of being a bit fluffy, but sometimes it's nice to be earnest for a minute or two.

To everyone else who responded: thank you!
