When internet becomes unhealthy

Where is the line when it becomes unhealthy? When we want to avoid reality? When we want to avoid the person sitting next to us? When we are too insecure to face the world? Do you ever catch yourself asking why you spend so much time with cybernet anonymous people instead of the real people around you?

I'm sitting next to another person and he's on his PC and I'm on mine. I always feel sad when I see people busy on their computers and ignoring people around them, however this seems to have become the norm.

Your thoughts?

2 of 8, these thoughts are against the greater good of the collective. Report for re-assimilation and a calibration of your cerebral-net interface.

I live in the middle of nowhere. It's raining. I've got no money.

The internet is better than telly, isn't it?

Did you post this hoping he'd read it and reply? See now that's a sign...

Ha ha. The relationship with the guy is platonic so he doesn't care what I do.

I guess I was wondering if people in functioning relationships spend oodles of time on their PC sitting next to each other without talking. Just seems odd.

Re: When internet becomes unhealthy

if it cuts you from real life, social interaction and all that stuff, it's unhealthy.

Now, if you're already off the real life, without social interaction and all that stuff and that internet gives you the opportunity to come back, to get social interaction and all that stuff, it's healthy

And you can trust me on that

We spend oodles of time on our computers, but there's plenty of talking going on...

Re: When internet becomes unhealthy

This is the only forum I spend so much time on. And it's an attempt to learn as much as I can about Switzerland. On the other hand it's filled with some really great people who seem to have lots of useful advice and entertaining stories.

and i want to have some friends when i get to switzerland

My ex and I spent more time communicating via msn than actually talking to each other ( I would be upstairs, he would be downstairs) it wasn't long before it all fell apart...

Re: When internet becomes unhealthy

Hubby and I met online, our computers are arranged so that we're facing each other while we're on them... they are just a portion of what we do together.

However, I do know what you mean as before we'd gotten together, I'd gone through a (very) rough patch and pretty much locked myself into my room with my computer. Other people in that situation maybe would have thrown themselves into work, drink, drugs, sex, hobbies like auto tinkering, so on... so I don't see a huge difference. Sometimes people do need to have some time to themselves, to bury themselves in things that don't (necessarily) involve or require other people so they can find / learn how to be themselves again.

If people have something to tell each other they will.
Look around at a restaurant for example, or people sitting on a bench on a lovely Sunday afternoon, or on a train,
same scenario, either they have something to say to each other or talk about or they don't.

Re: When internet becomes unhealthy

It's just a new means of communication. No different from the invention of the telephone.

It's only unhealthy if one gives it too much importance.
I've found some close friends here. No regrets.

You evaluate people as you would in real life, some share the same way of thinking and values, some intrigue by their difference, some leave you indifferent, .....and the strange ones are just to be left alone.

EF can be a small village though... as we do meet at different events and get to know each other.
