Are you really any better?

A famous pop singer has died*, apparently as a consequence of his/her personal failings.

If you think you are better than him/her, please list the reasons for believing so below.

*It doesn't matter which one.

Re: Are you really any better?

I truly belive that no-one is better than anyone else or worse for that matter. Also why must what they have experience be classed as failings? If you believe, as many do, that we are here to learn a lesson of some description then who are we to judge if they passed or failed?

Re: Are you really any better?

Not better than him/her, but I do believe that I have made better choices and personal decisions.

These decisions have allowed me to live past 27, and have allowed my children to be proud to call me "Mom".

On that statement noboby would have a glass of wine/beer because alcoholics have to start somewhere. And does anybody seriously believe that one chooses to be an addict.

My talents wouldn't fill a stadium like theirs can.

Seriously, I think they weren't bad people; their exceptional circumstances led them to a path of self destruction.

Re: Are you really any better?

And not every one who has a glass or two of wine, ends up being an alcoholic.

Whether or not anyone chooses to be an addict is up for debate, but one can choose to get help.

Bernard Madoff
John Wayne Gacy
Ike Turner
David Duke
Pablo Escobar
Menendez Brothers
Darlie Routier
(continue endless list)

I personally know many people who are better than the above. We are not all "just different, no better, no worse". Though I'm sure in some philosophical twist those who create Good in this world can be forged into selfish bastards, and those who create Bad can be excused for any number of reasons. On paper.

One of my best friends went to visit his grandfather (not by blood, but the man who was Grandpa anyway) at the Veteran's hospital. He had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's among other things including failing sight that was to lead to blindness in short order. When he saw the conditions of that place, he took all his savings and brought Grandpa on a whirlwind European tour, while he still could appreciate the sights. Then he quit his job running a Michelin starred restaurant so he could take shift work at a Waffle House and take care of his Grandpa full time, with a few hours help each day from a nurse. 3 years later Grandpa died, my friend was penniless and emotionally drained.

Would he be no better or worse of a human if he had just said 'see ya around Gramps' 3 years prior? That is a good question, and I doubt a sound answer can be found.

Does it make anyone uncomfortable that maybe they wouldn't or couldn't make such a commitment to a family member??

I wouldn't compare my friend to someone who made the decision to put their elderly parent or grandparent in a home or whatever, but to say that someone like Bernie Madoff is no worse than my friend- that I won't accept.

There are people in this world who make it a better place for those around them. And those who take as much out of it and those around them as they can, with no regard to the consequences to other people.

As for a pop singer who died young for stupid reasons- I wouldn't say I or anyone else is better or worse. It's just sad.

I keep a picture of my friend and his Grandpa on my fridge, it's of them in Paris on that last voyage. When I look at them it always inspires me to be a better person.

Re: Are you really any better?

This poses an interesting question, DB...

In my opinion, the only thing that makes someone "better" than someone else is morality, though I realize that morality is usually a matter of subjectivity/relativity. But I guess I also believe that there is a certain "law of universals" when it comes to morality (e.g. "do unto others...").

But there seems to remain a paradox...

Regardless, I think it's quite sad and unfortunate when anyone dies, regardless of their fault in the matter. Because even in the case of self-destruction, I do think that many people are pushed toward that behavior due to life circumstances and/or a simple glitch in their "wiring."

I don't think that I am better than anybody, but I would like to think, were I blessed with such talent I would try and use it.

Re: Are you really any better?

As people we are all equal (some more equal than others as one person once said...)

However, to remain equal, we cannot be judged on the sum or any one of our "better" traits. I may be better at certain things than famous people, who in turn may sing or play football better than me.

That is not to be confused with "better off" than others (more money etc) or "in better health" or even "Better at"... "Better" , qualified here, means something completely different and sadly we confuse it and perceive it to mean better overall.

Thus nothing we do or become makes us better or less better/equal than others, equality is a birthright and is not changed as we ourselves change through life.

Re: Are you really any better?

We all think we're better than the next person no ?
Stiff rules and structures, filled with our perception of what is right and what is wrong, and perhaps a certain loneliness ?
It takes a turning point and sometimes a breaking point, to transform and become open to the idea that we really are no different from anybody else.

Just a drop of water, part of the same ocean.
