That's interesting, as I have quite often found that when I have made minimal effort to look good I actually receive more attention. That could be because I look more approachable, I guess. All very intriguing, this attractiveness/approachability/attractive to the wrong type ratio, isn't it?!

Well I think generally speaking, females are looking for someone attractive and good looking in appearence, and males are just looking for someone period.

exactly, so this thread should be irrelevant. Doesn't matter if you're hot or not, or skinny or fat or curvy, nicely done makeup/shaved/hair/clothes or bedhead morning appearence.....unless you're a dude

I would agree with that and, at the risk of getting groaned, I would think that she would be deemed to be medically overweight (if not obese), in terms of her weight to height (and frame) ratio.
This woman is definitely NOT obese.

Aren't supermodels "medically underweight" in terms of their height to weight ratio?

(Medically speaking, which is more likely to kill you? Weighing 45 or 75 kilos?)

It's not about weight or curves really.
If a woman feels good about her body and her appearance she'll have confidence.
Confidence and a good sense of humour are considered attractive.

You took the words right out of my mouth (or should I say right off of my keypad?) Madame Sky.
I'll never forget this one boy I knew in high school. I found out towards the end of our last year in high school that he had a crush on me. He wasn't model perfect and a little bit on the chubby side. I didn't know him personally but chatted to him when I found out he liked me and by getting to know him, my perception of how he physically looked completely changed. He became beautiful to me. We never did become girlfriend and boyfriend (I was waaaay to shy. Long story short - my nickname was 'nun' in high school ).

What I'm trying to say is, people who are comfortable in their own skins have a kind of confidence that is very sexy.

Oh and that green dress is so beautiful it actually looks delicious!

Sort of tangential.

There's a campaign in the US right now... Actually started in Utah by two sisters, (twins i think, both studying body image) called beauty redefined. They've put up some billboards with body positive messages, like

You are capable of much more than being looked at
There is more to be than eye candy
Your reflection does not define your worth
If beauty hurts, we're doing it wrong

(i especially like the last one)

This is different from the dove campaign in that it is nonprofit and funded by these young women and contributions. So far the billboards are only in Utah, but it's generated a lot of discussion in social media.

Their blog is beautyredefined.net

And good for the UK for banning those l'oreal ads.

The point being that we have such a narrow, impossible standard of beauty.

Personally I agree with most of this, except for the confidence part. For me, it's a huge turn off. For me, I see it more as arrogance and closed-mindedness. Not really the simple people I need to waste time with.

Well, there is a huge difference between confidence and arrogance isn't there.

I disagree BUT I think the line between the two is a very fine one AND that some folks are more sensitive to the behaviors of others and will pick up on an "arrogant" vibe that some may miss.

I think that's one of those things that is the reason why some friends may be dumbfounded that not everyone they like likes everyone they like. What I mean is that some folks rub me the wrong way and some of those that do, I'd chalk up to them having an arrogant attitude in some way, but I know that not all of my friends would think / feel the same about that person.

very true, it is a fine line and very subjective.

Having had my anti-confidence discussion with many-I always ask them. "What in your life makes you so confident"

The answers are always generic, non-accomplishments which they have morphed into some sort of elite self-fulfillment when in reality, they're just mediocre and have developed a subconcious life-justification.

This is apparently, extremely attractive to the opposite gender though.

On some levels, it reminds me of this Chris Rock stand-up (caution language)

Re: Is this HOT or: real women have curves

Oh Chemmie.... confidence isn't arrogance.
You can be confident, without feeling superior to anybody.
You can like yourself, and like others even more.
You can consider certain bits and bobs about yourself as nice, and find that others are far more attractive/handsome/pretty.... without it taking anything away from you as a person.

Would confidence not be a way to claim: I am here, fully here, not part of the decorum, but an active player in this only existence that I have, I have my place among others, I am part of this world and it is a part of me ?

..... there is no arrogance in that is there ?

Re: Is this HOT or: real women have curves

I define confidence if a women can be completely herself, know the use of the word "no" (because not everyone can, including me at times - well still learning) and does not need to play the "I'm better than everyone else here" card.

Confidence comes from inside, whereas arrogance is a bit of a mask some people just need to survive in this world, and especially in the job field.

Like in everyone else's life confidence comes and goes. It's not a constant.

As much as I hate to admit it but I know exactly what you mean. I've often been told I was arrogant whereas I took it as simply being self confident.

I think there is a connection between the two somewhere. I think it has to do with an attitude.
You know an attitude like, yeah right, go on, say what you have to say but I'll stick to what I know and believe is right.
And there is the arrogance. That's a small example out of many of course.

So yes. Definitely something there to think about a bit.

Some men ain't that stupid either and can sens what's up or read between the lines perfectly well.
(Even if we women often think its the other way around and its us with the finely tuned antennaes.)
