The Peacock Syndrome - or: saving is for losers....

Courtesy of zerohedge.com, here is a fine piece on the psychological motives of consumer consumption.
Peacock Syndrome - America's Fatal Disease

Excerpt:
Quote:
...Lead author Dr Jill Sundie said: “This research suggests that conspicuous products, such as Porsches, can serve the same function for some men that large and brilliant feathers serve for peacocks.” The male urge to merge with hot women led them to make fiscally irresponsible short term focused decisions. I think the researchers needed to broaden the scope of their study. Millions of Americans, men and women inclusive, have been infected with Peacock Syndrome. Millions of delusional Americans thought owning flashy things, living in the biggest McMansion, and driving a higher series BMW made them more attractive, more successful, and the most dazzling peacock in the zoo....
Amen to all of that (and more).

Ciao

Paul

Americans, huh!

It's a good job Europeans are never flashy with their wealth, isn't it?

How is this specifically applied to Americans? (link didn't work)

Isn't this just basic nature of beings?

It's usualy shortened to just the second syllable.

When I look at some oh-so-learned results of psychological research with their BIG names for various “syndromes” I’m just reminded of Basil Fawlty’s classic line:

Next contestant, Mrs. Sybil Fawlty from Torquay. Specialist subject - the bleeding obvious.

Sometimes it really takes a Phd in some -ology or other to come along and point the patently self-evident.

Re: The Peacock Syndrome - or: saving is for losers....

Not sure why it's made out to be an "American" thing, Americans are hardly the only ones who flash their wealth.

Quote:
"Moscow is home to the world's second highest concentration of millionaires after New York!"

Of course, that's an extraordinary example, but I know of plenty of "average Joe" seeming people from all over, who I met here, who spend money on flashy things. Whether it is flashy handbags, watches or clothes, we all do it in our own way.

One's place of origination matters little - except perhaps that folks from countries or who have personal backgrounds where individual wealth is something relatively "newly discovered" tend to be a bit more flashy than folks who have had money in their families for generations.

Meanwhile, "Keeping up with the Joneses" maybe something seen as quintessential American (I doubt that being exclusively "ours" also), it has meant a heavy reliance on readily available credit, which leads to trouble. Unless others DO learn from that "American" mistake, that problem will become as widespread as the also-spreading propensity toward obesity for which we Americans are singled out as well. Judging by some of the social programs I know of here - one example being something my husband was involved with; going to schools to teach teens about debt - I'd say that the "Peacock Syndrome" is already well established here.
