Re: Western Diet link to ADD

I see supplementing both omega 3 and omega 6 mentioned in this thread, and would like to clarify something around that. We do need both, but at a certain ratio. Omega 6 is very stable, but omega 3 is rather unstable, and therefore in general (almost) not present in seeds, from which most food products are made. Breeders over the centuries have actually unknowingly selected against the omega 3's by selecting for good storability! Therefore we tend to get more than enough omega 6, and to balance it is wise to add an omega 3 supplement. For this I would recommend krill oil, as it is lower in the food chain than fish oil, and therefore is less polluted and also not contributing to the overfishing.

Any recommendations for people with fish allergies? I have taken linseeds in the past but they have unwanted side affects (effects?)

I think you'll find that the main allergen in fish and seafood is Parvalbumin, found mainly in fish muscles. Theoretically, Omega 3 should be OK, BUT there is always the possibility (probability) that there could be traces of PV in the oil. It all comes down to how it is processed, and the source of course.

Thanks. It's actually Iodine that I react to, so not strictly fish but I find it easier to explain it that way, especially if I'm invited over for food. It's an ongoing war trying to find out what I can and cannot eat, so I tend to avoid all fish, although realistically, I could probably eat some types.

Re: Western Diet link to ADD

There is a vegan omega-3 supplement that would work for you, an algae form of DHA/EPA from VPure. DHA/EPA is the form that your body can use, the omega-3 in plant sources like linseed is a precursor that your body has to convert (and there is debate how efficient your body is at that). you can find it at http://www.v-pure.com/

I just saw the site quotes it's prices in pounds, so shipping might be not too expensive :-).

Ah, only saw your last reply after posting mine, if the iodine is the problem, I am not so sure that v-pure will be good for you either, since it is also a marine product, and kelp is rich in iodine!
