you do know what that song is about right? i suppose if you on your own for 2 weeks it may be approriate

anyway.. you definately want to do mount fuji and kyoto, you can travel by bullet train between them pretty quickly. Hokkaido, the north island has had the winter olympics but its a flight there and theres not much to do so i would rule that out.

oh and obvioulsy tokyo too..

Actually the songwriter has denied that it has anything to do with that. Whether he's telling the truth or not is another matter

Funny, I downloaded the song a couple of weeks ago and have since read many posts by both the pro and anti wank camps. Whatever the truth, it's a fantastic song.

I was in Tokyo four years ago and yes people do NOT speak English, but they are so nice and helpful that it just did not bother me. I loved the TV shows they are so errr ridiculous? the Japanese can be really funny

One of my colleague was in Japan for 2 years or so. He usually tell that the people are really nice and they know English but for some unknown reason they prefer to speak Japanese. But one thing is sure you are going to have fun time in Japan. Have a nice and safe trip

Re: I think I'm turning Japanese.. I really think so....[Travel advice to Japan]

Japan - my favourite country in the entire world with my all time fav cuisine. With its language, cuisine and culture, its a whole little world of its own. Dont worry about not being able to speak Japanese, most teens do now. As for food, if you arent a fan of sushi, there are lots of other choices like teriyaki, ramen etc.

Tokyo is definitely a must when you are there - of course. A bullet train will get you there pronto - but beware, expensive. Most accomodation in Tokyo will be expensive too. Dont stay in hotels - there are lots of ryokans (inns) scattered around the city. Its traditional and cheaper than hotels. Plus you get the experience of sleeping on a tatami mat

Dont have the names right now, but will dig them out for you.

Things to do in Tokyo:

- catch a sumo fight. The national sumo hall is in Tokyo. There are sumo seasons, cant remember exactly when now but google is your friend.
- Shibuya: the famous crossing is there. Organised chaos! but if you want to watch it from a safe distance, there is a Starbucks in the Tsutaya building nearby. Cant miss it. lots of little hole in the walls too for great food. Some restaurants will have English menus outside for tourists.
- Meiji Shrine
- Imperial palace
- Ginza and Roppongi: you'll love their ecclectic tshirts
- Mount Fuji (definitely a day or two trip by itself) you can choose to stay overnight with a family in Mount Fuji. Lots of tours offer that. Let me know if you need any.

KYOTO:
If you have the time, head over to Kyoto from Osaka. Lots of temples but the most famous one has got to be Kiyimizu dera. It will give you impressive views of the city. The Jishu shrine within the temple is a favourite destination for people praying for love

Also, the geisha hamachi, Gion is definitely good to visit, albeit touristy. Alot of its architecture is still preserved amongst the cobbled stone streets, and many many tea houses for you to rest and soak in the culture. There are other geisha districts too, but Gion is the most popular.

Final tip: like China, if you dont speak the language properly, just carry a card with the name of your hotel and its address on you at all times. Easier to show people if you get lost. The Japanese are warm, helpful and polite people. I cant think of a better place to go for a holiday. So jealous!!!

Have fun and can I shamelessly ask for a bag of green tea?

Re: I think I'm turning Japanese.. I really think so....[Travel advice to Japan]

Look out for the many festivals (many from the local shrine) or fireworks in summer. People are strolling around, eating, drinking etc. late into the night. If you are going soon you might want to have a look at the nara to kae festival.

Even if you are going later in the year Nara could be a nice place to visit for you. It is just about 40 minutes by train from Osaka. It's mainly about the deer, temples and shrines though, so if you get bored after the 10th temple/church/shrine/palace/museum you shouldn't do Nara-Kyoto back to back. And Osaka itself (although some trip advisors call it the ugliest city in Japan) is a nice and/or interesting city to explore (especially the food). If you like fish go to the Osaka Aquarium. Will post if I can think of something interesting to do in Osaka besides the obvious.
