Why use somebody else's picture?

I have a general question:-

Why do some people choose a picture of a famous person as their avatar? Why not use a picture of yourself or something neutral like a bear for instance.

Why use a picture of somebody that isn't you? Just curious, not a criticism in any way :-)

(I hope my bear isn't famous or I'm in trouble now)

Trying to explain seriously, I'd say that for me, I select pictures for my avatar to strike a chord in others. Usually my intent is to 1. seek out like-minded folk and 2. to say a little something about myself WITHOUT posting an actual photo of myself.

Those who I know (and like) well enough to show more (and see more of them) I have met in person anyhow.

Meanwhile, it generally is NOT a good idea to post easily-accessed photos of yourself on the internet. I learned that lesson the hard way, although even then, it wasn't direct access, it was someone acting nice toward me so they could have a photo, which they then photoshopped then posted their altered photo of me on their own website.

Of course, jerks with malicious intent aren't the only ones who could (and do) use personal photos without permission, I've read articles about advertisements using personal photos and family vacation photos and such without the permission of the subjects.

Here is one such article:

Re: Why use somebody elses' picture?

I think the reasons for not using your own photo are pretty obvious. But I still want to put a face (or bear) to a person, so it feels like an actual conversation with real people. And I think an avatar could tell people more about you than a photo of yourself. For example I know cricketer likes cricket and Peg A likes lolcats, I wouldn't get this from a photo of them.

Re: Why use somebody else's picture?

I guess it would be for anonymity, even though it would be nice sometimes, to put a face to a name.

Re: Why use somebody else's picture?

But why choose a picture of a celebrity? Isn't that hypocritical? You don't want to be identified and have your photo stolen so you assume somebody else's identity instead, cool.

Now I am confused.

You could be right. It's almost the weekend maybe I should calm down a bit and go for an early beer...

Me!

One of my favourite movies, favourite sound track, and it's an image of total relaxation, sun beating down, skiving off work. They don't make em this this any more.

Smashing idea! I might join you. Obviously I don't mean physically, but I'll think of you while I'm sipping a cold one.
