Re: What's "Right" About America?

Well, I'm sitting here on the Lake Michigan shore, enjoying my breakfast bagel (yes - a real bagel!!) after an invigorating morning swim. There are a good number of folks out enjoying the morning, including a group of dogs and their owners romping in the waves, a little farther down a family of small children are building sand castles, an elderly couple taking their morning constitutional. And...

...Neither group is complaining, criticizing, or calling the police on the other. There's a refreshing 'live and let live, let's all enjoy' vibe. People stop to chat, offer help and tips, interesting conversations over the book I'm reading.

This trip back home has shown me that yes, many things are indeed amiss at the moment - but the basic friendliness, neighborliness, sincerity, helpfullness and optimistic outlook of the average American remains.

And that is the country's strength.

That, and the little diner we drove by advertising "Burritos as big as your head! Not just for breakfast anymore!"

Re: What's "Right" About America?

Now this might spark a debate, but I think one of the greatest things about the US is the media (movies, TV and music etc).

Sure there's a lot of crap in there, but there's also a lot of good stuff too, and a good majority of the rest of the world consumes it without regret.

You put your idea into the mass media, and regardless of how dumb or ridiculously biased they are, as long as has good production value and marketing (and the Americans are pros at this at a surprisingly deep psychological level) it will be consumed by the masses and worshiped as the truth.

Re: What's "Right" About America?

I miss..

- Conversations that you can have with random people rather than just sitting across who has a constipated look on their face through out the tram / train / bus ride.

- Look at people from the Armed Forces and walking up to them to actually thank them rather than laughing the Swiss army knife totting junkies.

- You don't have to wear your ethnicity, color or religion on your sleeve. You can just BE.......

- Customer Service

- Your right to do what the hell you want and when you want

- The 2nd ammendment (aka the right to bear fire arms!!!)

- You can plead the 5th Ammendment!!! when you misuse the 2nd ammendment. :-)

- Big Block, street legal American Muscle Cars from the 60's and the 70's

- Free Refills for Soda

- iHoPs, Chilli's, Cheese Factory, Nando's etc.. etc...

Re: What's "Right" About America?

I have a hard time believing some of the things listed here. It's a good thing to drive at 16? I lost multiple friends in high school to car accidents because they (myself included) were far too irresponsible to drive and the actual test is a joke. Cruising the 405? I wasted months of my life sitting in traffic on that featureless infernal highway. And as far as freedom goes, a health food shop in my old LA neighborhood got raided this week by multiple armed cops wearing bulletproof vests. The crime? Selling unpasteurized goats milk. In my home state ( in the northeast, mind you) you can't buy alcohol after 8pm every evening, nor on Sundays. You can't drink a beer on a beach or in most public places. What isn't controlled by idiot politicians is controlled by corporations, and their "donations" are legally considered free speech.

There are a few things I miss about the US. The unmatched nature and landscape, the variety of good food, and...uhh...yeah, that's it. The right in America makes the SVP seem like hippies, working conditions are atrocious for the average person, public education is a criminally underfunded joke while much of the higher education is an extremely expensive joke, and its only getting worse.

7 years later, I can safely say that moving here was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Also music...oh how I miss music. Good music on street corners. What I seem to hear more here sounds more like bad karaoke more often than not

Re: What's "Right" About America?

Array of shopping on Sunday's
Canned cream soup (great for casseroles)
Tex Mex food
Doesn't cost money to park everywhere

That being said, I left the US because I feel it's culture is heading in the wrong direction. I lived in Florida for the past 14 years and I have to say that you have more people in CH who can speak English than Florida. There are some amazing places in the US, but the large, negative parts will be it's downfall.
