Has EF made you more Swiss than the Swiss?

Ok, the title might be a bit misleading. What I mean is, do people find that the information and discussions on EF often result in them being better informed about Swiss culture, history, geography and current affairs than the average Swiss person?

Nah, it doesn't matter how many threads there are on it - you'll always get a noob who has been 2 nanoseconds in the country launching an attack because he's heard from his equally noob language-school buddy he can't piss in his own toilet after 10pm.

Yes...in another thread about construction noise I mentioned the equipment parked outside my flat. I probably wouldn't have thought anything of the noise if I hadn't read many previous threads about intolerance of noise. Is this the osrt of thing you meant?

I think only in very technical ways. For example, I know way more about the various types of visas, visa waivers and residence permits by now than do most of my colleagues (to be fair to my colleagues, I would be just as clueless if someone asked me about their US equivalents.)

I don't know half as much about Swiss current affairs as they do though, and next to nothing about Swiss history. To be honest anyone who wants to keep up with those ought to be reading a newspaper or encyclopedia, not browsing EF. The selection of topics that ever get "reported" here is quite... eclectic.

Re: Has EF made you more Swiss than the Swiss?

Many people I know have gone native in their outlook and attitudes. As far as implicating EF, just read some of "I took a stand against stupid rules" threads and see how the tide turns against the OP soon as the honorary-swiss start posting.

Re: Has EF made you more Swiss than the Swiss?

EF hasn't made me "more Swiss than the Swiss", after nearly 30 years here I've managed that well enough on my own.

But EF has brought to my attention that the Swiss go about slapping the rules in our faces and then, in a lot of cases, breaking them, eg like our new neighbours. They are really noisy, inconsiderate and totally up their arses... OK I can't do much about the latter but I can do something about the noise especially on Sundays. I will have a quiet word, face to face.... oh how they love a bit of one-on-one conflict... NOT! Of course, I will get the paper work to back me up... you know what the Swiss are like - sticklers for PROOF!! Because what would I know, me foreigner!! Ooooooooh paranoia!!

Swiss enough? Or should that be knowing the Swiss enough?

Re: Has EF made you more Swiss than the Swiss?

EF doesn't make me more swiss, it's rather the opposite. I'm reminded daily that I'm a foreigner here when I browse the sections. I didn't feel that way in the country I was living in previously.
