Come to Moscow and find a job in a week's time

Having seen here over years piles of those posts from people painfully looking for a job in Switzerland for many months and years (somebody on these pages even told me 2-3 years is normal) I thought I'll drop it here. Why don't you come to Russia? In St. Petersburg and especially in Moscow you can find an IT job in a week. A person with a European background will have a strong bargaining position. Is it really worth it spilling all of your blood while hunting for a Swiss job?

As a matter of fact, the keyboards bear two sets of characters at the same time, often in different color, like black/red or white/yellow. The one set is Cyrillic, the other one is exactly the US layout.

Re: Come to Moscow and find a job in a week's time

Because Russia is cold, dark, unsafe, nationalistic, corrupt, low paid, high cost, polluted, unfriendly, difficult language for non-Russian speakers .... and Switzerland isn't any of those things.

And before you groan me - I spend 50% of my time there

(Cute girls though )

About 30 degrees right now.

Perhaps... but there are no ghetto districts like around Paris or in Berlin where you can get shot or stabbed just because you're white.

And I suppose Switzerland is not? Swiss love foreigners, respect Muslims etc. Switzerland is known as European xenophobic headquarters.

That yes, sadly.

low paid, high cost
Salaries are higher than in Germany or France.
Costs are generally lower, food is very cheap.
Unless you've been shopping in tourist locations but then it's your mistake.

It's also not a secret that the Switzerland inhabitants go shopping to the neighboring Germany and France even to buy basic food then smuggle it back since it several times cheaper there than in Switzerland.

Definitely not true. But when you're coming across as a reserved person you get the same attitude back.

The same as German is for non-German speakers. And many people do master it when needed.

Switzerland is all of those things, except perhaps unsafe and corrupt.

Genuinely happy that you enjoy it there.....actually, I love spending time there and I find that once you get past the barriers, the people can be warm and friendly. But you asked why people wouldn't rather live in Moscow than Switzerland, and I was giving my view why not. It wasn't meant to be Russia bashing - it was a side by side scorecard of what MOST people would think in my experience

In a survey last week, I think 40% of young Russians stated that they wanted to leave Russia - that is higher than during the Soviet period (although not sure how reliable the surveys were ) - I think that says a lot about how it is to live in such a country.

And as far as the weather....come on 2 months of sun doesn't make up for 10 months of winter......and when you have felt your breath freeze inside your nose at 27c below whilst walking to the Moscow Metro, those nice summer evenings feel a long time ago

Anyway - genuinely glad you're happy there....

Have you ever wondered why people come to Switzerland and not Russia for their IT jobs?

Re: Come to Moscow and find a job in a week's time

Not to be rude but, you started looking for job here because of a reason right? IT could be that Swiss jobs pay good money, there is security and CH is a safe country...I am truly glad you found a job in Russia, but for me for instance, it would not be an option. Maybe you find some peopl einterested though? But what about the language?

Ironically enough they are not in Switzerland but as I understand there is significant racial violence towards say African people in some of the Russian cities. Just what I have heard.

What, you had better tell that to the highest percentage of "people born in another country" living in any major European country. I guess the numbers don't agree.

I am pretty sure that happens everywhere in the world, even Russia. If I remember correctly a while ago Moscow was considdered one of the most expensive cities in the world to travel to....has that really gone completely the opposite way?

Since when does reserved = unfriendly?

Actually for many western europeans German or one of the Swiss languages are much easier to master than a more slavic language because they belong to very closely related language families.

That is about right.
Anyway I believe this is the trend in many countries. I've heard a lot of Germans taking about the same thing (auswandern anyone?).

Hasn't been 10 months of winter in the entire history. January/Februray can be cold but nowhere near -27C, sadly, this is now passé. About minus 10-15, no more, but even that happens on selected days, again, sadly. But then the same temperatures do happen in DE/CH/FR. So where's the difference?

Anyway I don't suppose it can be a serious discussion. Just wanted to illuminate a bit the sad employment forums and show that there are places on Earth where job search can go a lot faster than 2-3 years.

Not true.....I lived in Moscow last year and suffered it....the winters are nothing like Swiss....not even close!

Russia is a bit similar to US - if you earn well - you live relatively much better than your compatriots. Halfway between US and India. What if you slip down the income ladder? That must be source of the poll results quoted above.
And sure enough, had I a non-white skin, I wouldn't risk encountering the Putin's "our youth" or their more extreme-right colleagues...

Unfortunately this is true...a good friend of mine from Peru got mugged and drugged and beat up and left to die in the streets of Moscow...funny thing is that that had never happened to him in Peru!!

That is only for tourists, if you live in hotels and eat in restaurants. Otherwise it's very cheap.

Last time I bought some backery, what you would call a Brötchen, several pieces calculated 0.04 Euro each. The same thing costs about 0.55 in Germany on the street, 0.30 in Kaufland. That's for comparison.

Indeed and I completely agree with you. If you are looking for quick job placement for loads of money and those are your only two requirements I would suggest Dubai.

It took me over a year to find a job in Switzerland but it is a very small country with very few people who are in general increadibly weathly with a non-noncense attitude about things. I am not surprised it is very hard to find a job here.

Johannesburg, once for pulling in front of somebody by mistake on the motorway. Then twice more just due to being in cross-fire situations. Also had an Uzi pulled in my face in a night club for making what could have been a bit of a silly joke...lol.

I just think that CH is a great country when you have the right qualifications, my husband (I guess he was partly lucky) landed a job after 2 months of being here, so really the outlook was not bad for us...but you should udnerstand that the demand for jobs is higher than the offer, unfortunately

Terrible...
But comes in line with the other stories I've heard about the place. Personally wouldn't risk going there.
