| | Google Image search now supports dragging an image into the search box.
Will have to see how this one works out. Best test is to drag a photo of yourself and see what comes back :-) http://www.google.co.uk/imghp?hl=en&tab=ii
My first result returned Barack Obama and Hugh Grant |

I believe at this stage they are doing object recognition and maybe face detection to a small degree.
Not too sure if images are stored with metadata or the results are compared at run time, I prefer to think the image characteristics are indexed as and when they are stored and it is still a text search that returns results.

I assume all the photos you submit are secretely uploaded. One day Barack Obama, in a slow day at the office, will upload his photo and be told he's actually Upthehatters2008.

Another app. that seems to use similar technology is Google Goggles.
Apparently, if you take a photo of something on your iPhone, Google Goggles will search for related information. I saw this featured on TV yesterday. The overall impression was not very good. The usual search methods seemed as efficient or quicker.

But what it is useful for is translating text from letters. |

I put in the pic I use on LinkedIn and it found my LinkedIn profile. I also have the same pic on Facebook but it didn't return that, so my privacy settings on there are probably Ok. As far as other images go, I just got a bunch of houses..
Interestingly, it also pointed me to a site called Yasni which has a scary amount of information on me and others who share the same name.

Reason: Edited oversize pic from the text, sorry, there are size limits.
