QI Fact of the Day

Quote:
In 1994, 35,000 Americans insured themselves against being kidnapped and eaten by aliens.
QI

This raises so many questions:
1. Who makes the claim and what proof do they need?
2. What happens if you get kidnapped but not eaten?
3. What are the premiums like?
4. Has any insurance company ever paid out on a policy like this?
5. Is it possible to nominate someone you think should be kidnapped and eaten by aliens?

In answer to your question
1. The policy holder will make the claim. Not the person that has been extraterrestially consumed
2. The policy holder may have to repay the claim 5billion light years later
3. The premiums are astronomic
4. Only to one of their mates
5. I suspect that a couple of this worlds presidents and elected representatives already have been but were regurgitated shortly afterwards.

Re: QI Fact of the Day

1994 was just after X-Files came out on TV.
I wonder if nowadays there are similarly popular policies protecting against vampires/zombies.

Also, many of these insurance policies were set up by friends as a joke (also further mentioned in that same QI episode).

I guess in the US you can't just ask a bookmaker to give you odds on Elvis being alive, or George Bush being an alien and then place a bet on that. Insurance has always been a bit like gambling.

Re: QI Fact of the Day

Many household policies also include automatic protection against:

"Falling Aero and Space debris"

Another moot point -
What if you are the returning kidnapped, non-eaten, anally probed policy holder, but you crash into someones house upon arival back to earth PRIOR (due to a lapse in the time/space continuum) to the inception of your policy period.

are you:
a) a dickhead, or....... no actually, this is a short multiple choice question
