Talking to myself loudly

Hi guys,

This is really an off topic thread, kind of creepy, though I'm pretty sure I'll amuse people in here... I'm starting talking to myself. I talk loudly as though there was someone listening. I no longer think quietly to myself. I've noticed this for the last 3 weeks... I'm wondering if that's normal or I'm going crazy. I never lived on my own. When I left my parent's house, 6 years ago, I always shared apartment with someone, friends, girlfriends... but I've been living on my own for the last 5 months and I've noticed that I'm talking and thinking loudly... What worries me is that I'm answering my own questions.

I accept all kind of opinions, jokes or whatever you guys want to say.

Fran

Re: Talking to myself loudly

My old teacher said that the first sign of madness was talking to yourself, and the second sign is hair growing on the palm of your hands.

So check your hands!

Once you start having a full blown question and answer session with yourself in public then maybe - just maybe - it might be time to seek professional help.

Re: Talking to myself loudly

I don't think you're crazy, I do it from time to time as well. Sometimes I'll be thinking about things I have to do, and I say it out loud to myself. Then there are other times when I don't feel like having conversations with my kids, but I look around and it's only them I have to talk to, so I talk to myself, and answer back. I then get asked "Who are you talking to Mommy"?

Have a pet - it will solve all your problems. You can talk to them all day, and everybody will think it is totally normal

Thought about that... maybe it'll fix the problem, but I also thought that it might actually make it worse because I'd be talking to a pet, which would turn me into a weird and creepy person, if I'm not already.

Re: Talking to myself loudly

My 13 year old son talks loudly to himself. I often think he is talking to his best friend: himself. I find it all extremely endearing.

Re: Talking to myself loudly

Nah, as previously mentioned when you start doing it around other people that is when you have a problem.

The other warning sign is when you start talking to inanimate objects.

It's an isolation thing. Happens to lots of people the first time they live on their own. Being in a place where you don't speak the local language also contributes.

My advice would be:
(A) - don't worry about it - you're normal!

(B) - keep working on your German. When you can understand some of the conversations around you on the tram, trust me, you'll start to feel much less alone.

(C) - in the meantime, do make time to hang out with your co-linguists. Talk about anything and everything. Sometimes it's just good to hear the sound of your own voice.

(D) - if you find you're still doing it and it bothers you, put the radio on. Often when I notice that I'm talking to myself, it's connected with a vague unease that the house is 'too quiet'. (I grew up in a large family.... our house was many things but it was never quiet.) Playing music or having a radio on in the next room really helps. Even opening a window to the street can be enough.

(E) - see (A) above

It's when you start arguing with yourself though that you should really start to worry......

Re: Talking to myself loudly

Talking to yourself is still okay.

What flaunts dangerously with being borderline cuckoo is when you start having arguments with yourself...

...and when you are pleased at winning this said argument !

EDIT: GG...I guess I need help.

I was a teenager when I began to talk to myself and it is because I worked at Walmart.

believe me I do not charge 5 cents

Seriously though, talking to yourself is normal, as is hearing voices...when you do not recognize the voices as you own then we have a problem

I'm convinced that the fact that I don't understand a word what other people speak around me is contributing to this to happen.

Thanks for the comments/advice

When I'm with the grandchildren I don't understand a word either, and we're supposed to speak the same language.
