Can I put my freezer on balcony?

Just bought a freezer and realised it is a bit too big to be put inside apartment. Has anyone ever put their fridge or freezer on balcony? I am just wondering if the electronics behind will get spoilt due to moisture or coldness? Thanks for any tips.

Re: Can I put my freezer on balcony?

Interesting

I would imagine that the freezer will die very quickly in the summer heat, due to it having to work too hard to keep things frozen in the 30° weather.

If its a cheap freezer, it might not do so well in the rain either.

Bollox. If the seal is good then you just use more power. 30° is not abnormal.

Think on the brightside you might be able to turn it off if we have a really cold winter.

In terms of the moisture or coldness, a lot of people have the freezer in their cellar... and geez they can get cold. Freezers also work perfectly fine in very humid tropical parts of the world.

I wouldn't put it outside if it was unsightly (likely to get complaint), noisy (ditto) or if it was likely to have water splashed on it by rain, melting snow or plant watering (danger Will Robinson).

Not a good idea at all for above reasons. Very unlikely this will be allowed by your proprietor either. Why not check with the shop to see if you can exchange it for a smaller one- with a voucher for the difference.

I would be willing to wage money that an average freezer will not cope well with being in consistent daytime temperatures around and above 30°.

Re: Can I put my freezer on balcony?

I have seen people having fridges on balconies, those terraccey ones. And shoe armoires there, too. Pretty much everything, including a bird cage and a rabbit cage.

Someone in my block used to have a freezer on his balcony - but it was shaded.
Another has a hammock - and another has just about everything but the kitchen sink on his

Re: Can I put my freezer on balcony?

Actually, I think the problem is the opposite to what everyone is posting. A freezer is a heat exchange unit designed to work in a warm environment. If I recall, I think they do NOT work well in COLD environments.

Re: Can I put my freezer on balcony?

Well..thanks for all the replies. I think I will just somehow find a place inside the apartment to accommodate the freezer. I just feel that it is safer as the balcony is not really fully covered from rain etc...and no9t forget the possible trouble of complaint from neighbour too...

A nice table runner on the top with a nice plant might help soften the look.

I know it is a bit late- but next time - MEASURE

Nonsense.

Outside is normally no hotter than inside.

I have had one of my fridges on the balcony for years, as do several neighbors.

We have a shoe thing on the other balcony, and had a rabbit cage (and later, a rabbit pen taking up half the balcony) until we move the rabbit to the garden I have at work.

Re: Can I put my freezer on balcony?

Exposure to the elements would be the main problem. Fridges work in tropical climates much hotter than Switzerland so temperature shouldn't be an issue.

AFAIK neighbours can complain but if it isn't forbidden in the contract then that's all they can do. Or am I wrong?

not correct.... all my years in africa i have always seen and had freezers outside and they perform perfectly well. some were used as fridges (set to minimum), some were used as freezers, without any issues

Actually, I have a flower box on top of mine, though it's filled with basil.

Re: Can I put my freezer on balcony?

In short: yes you can.

We did for ~6 years on an South facing balcony. It wasn't officially allowed, but as we were on the 4th floor, no one cared to notice.

Only ever had a problem when MIL left the door ajar...

If you are worried about rain, then just go to your local DIY store, pick up a big piece of MDF or similar and make a rain-break. As I say, worked fine for us.
