With this thread, I will solve all your housing problems
For those who are too broke to get on the housing ladder, an American firm is here to help.
Jay Shafer's Tumbleweed Tiny House Company makes cute little homes that start from the bargain price of $99.
The cheapest home is a flat-pack to be built by the owner but, if you're not very handy, there are ready-made versions for $38,997.
The teeny homes, which start at just 65 square feet are kitted out with fully functioning kitchens, bathrooms complete with composting toilets and sleeping areas.
Some models even come on wheels.
As well as being environmentally friendly the homes are affordable for people on meagre incomes.
As the debt problem in the U.S. reaches tipping point Mr Shafer, who lives in one of his houses in Sebastapol, California, says that less can be more.
'People are starting to get a clue I think,' he said.
'People are starting to understand that excess is not necessarily a luxury. It can be a burden, a liability. People are living in 4,000 and 6,000 square foot debtors prisons.'

I LOVE those houses!!
I've wanted one for a long time. My husband thinks I'm off my rocker, but he has considered helping me build one as my studio in the back yard. Then when we retire we'll move it somewhere else.

That is totally awesome. Do they ship to Switzerland ?
Pretty sure to attract some looks from the neighbours and get the gemeinde on your back for breaking every building code in CH but it may be worth it just for their faces

I don't know. Most of them have steep enough roofs! lol.

See you CAN retire not being a millionaire!
PS, it's the plans that start at $99 not houses.
I saw those a while back and fell in love with them as well. Not for my regular house but rather as something more like a traveling vacation cabin during vacation times and a reading room or so other times.

I've been seriously thinking of building one of these for a long time.
There are 3 or 4 that are in the 75/85m2 range, like the Ernesti that I've been eyeing. Not so tiny anymore really.
My uncle build his own house with his own 2 hands & I have that bug too. Probably not in CH though. If it were to be in CH, it would be one of the smaller ones, like the Harbinger (30m2) to use as a studio with a sleeping loft for when the old bag, i mean, MIL comes to visit. (j/k! No MIL's should be offended). Alas, I think it's just a dream for when we retire.
I have the book in PDF. I'd give you a copy but I think that might be... um... illegal.
Why does that guy and his business old keep appearing in the news as news? It's ancient.
Um... becuase people are still interested? Anyway, his company is obviously growing as he has a bunch more houses out. When I first read about him he only had the tiny house.

The Famous Five had a house like that years ago!
I was thinking of one of these too. But they are just too expensive now.

Driving into Rapperswil from Zurich with the lake, on your right, just after Kempraten you pass such a teeny house on the left. Not one of this guys but very similar. Apparently there is a waiting list of renters.
