pen stain worth a 300$? safety deposit reduction

I recently sublet an apartment in the Massachusetts area, the safety deposit was 2200$. Now 5 weeks later, the sublessor agreed to give me back only 1700$ because she found a stain on the sofa that she had to pay an upholstery cleaner to try and get out (they were unsuccessful).

the couch was old and never worth the 500$ for a pen stain.

I never met my sublessor in person.

I'm only a subtenant so I don't know what rights I have.
Also it's really just a few hundred bucks, not worth to suing her over, especially knowing that letting myself into legal action would cost more than the deposit itself and my valuable time.

Shall I demand receipts for the work done? I mean in ideal case, we both should have gone through the apartment together to decide and agree on any damage. But since I am no longer there, can she, if she wants, decide all on her own how much she charge me for the pen stain?

Yes, and not just some amateurish receipt. Something by a valid company that you can contact to verify.

Wisdom, something gained through experience.

Apparently, yes. Unless someone decided for her like her evil boyfriend, or her CIA handler, or the terrorist cell she was trying to infiltrate, or....

You already know the answer. Ask her for a legitimate receipt for the cleaning costs and allow her to deduct only that amount from your deposit.
