Re: Spelling of Zurich

A is correct when writing in English

B & C are both correct when writing in German, however most of the time it will be spelled "Zürich"

D is wrong

Correct is Zürich

without an umlaut, you always put a letter "e" after.

so, Zuerich is also correct

Zurich is just how we write it in English

Züerich is completely wrong

a) Zurich - English language spelling
b) Zürich - German language spelling
c) Zuerich - German language spelling if you don't have the Umlaut (¨)
d) Züerich - wrong
e) possibly, otherwise you wouldn't ask
f) Züri - How people in Zurich spell Zurich

Re: Spelling of Zurich

Zürich / Zurich / Zurigo / Turitg
in the four national languages.

(English sides with French on this one; spellings in other languages include Zúrich, Zuric, Sürix, Curych, Ciurichas... )

Re: Spelling of Zurich

Regarding the umlaut, we just moved to a street called Tüelenstrasse - with an umlaut U followed by an e. So I suppose it could also be spelled Tueelenstrasse?

Often when I explain the üe part people look at me with pity as if to say "poor love doesn't even know the unlaut rule......."

When you can't write the umlaut, then yes. üe is a different sound from ü/ue.

It's the same phenomen as in Grüezi (Grü-e-zi).
