And if you are really nice to sales staff in some stores and tell them the long story about how you miss America and have to come back to shop and see your friends, sometimes you can get a discount on your purchases. Most managers have the ability to make discretionary discounts. You are, after all, helping the economy.
Alternatively... you can also show them your boobs.

Wouldn't I have to set up a US iTunes account though?
Yes, but as long as you click the box saying that you're using gift cards you don't need a US credit card or address. In iTunes you click the little flag at the bottom and choose the US to go to the US store. I have US and UK accounts, couldn't see a reason for a Swiss one.

Shame it won't be The Sun. I've always fancied a career as a Page 3 Stunna.

Can I just get some confirmation that US sales tax is NOT the same as VAT; ie I cannot claim it back on leaving the country.
Secondly, would a US-purchased MacBook charger work in Europe (with the correct pin attachment, naturally); is there a 120V vs 220V power issue?

Yes on all accounts. Buy the travel pak thing if you dont' already have one and the charger works just fine. I bought my Macbook Air before coming over and it's fine.

As an aside, sales tax is not federal.
