Dear Santa...

Ho ho ho. M&S mince pies appearing on the shelves...It must be getting near the time that is getting near the time to think about Christmas. (Especially booking on for December flights or trying to book a hotel room in Edingburgh - act now !)

Plans ?
Wishes for presents ?
Visitors ?
Don't celebrate it ?

No cost EF event where we just all meet up in various Swiss cities ?

Re: Dear Santa...

I hunt for the elusive "Christmas feeling". It has a lot to do with mulled wine and mince pies and giant Christmas trees and snow and cold and a rowing fire and English carols. A Dickensian Christmas. A London Christmas.

.....but I'll probably be here I'd think.

Re: Dear Santa...

Plans - spending it at my mothers place in England (I can't wait! My children love it there and their grandparents are going to make it very special for them plus I get to cook and bake to my hearts content as the children are all set with babysitting )
Wishes for presents - wouldn't mind something that came in a blue box
Visitors - nope, I'll be the guest! Yeehaw!
No cost EF event where we just all meet up in various Swiss cities - very cool idea

Make all that happen here ! Nothing hard...might want to warn the neighbours about the tree though. Norwegian ?

Re: Dear Santa...

We could have a Secret Santa event at a bar near HB, within everyone's budget and easy to get to and home from.

Re: Dear Santa...

M&S pies? Where? I'll be here or maybe heading to SA to visit my niece but it'd be great to have a christmas eve event. I'm not much of a christmas-y person, but I put on a good show for my daughter. Christmas is fun, especially with gloggi

Re: Dear Santa...

We've had two white christmases. This year we're looking forward to an Australian one! A month of sun, surf, sand and Santa on a surfboard. Seafood, white wine for Christmas lunch and a morning ocean swim before presents.

Yes, that's my ideal too. Like you, I relate that to London. However, the reality somehow never quite lived up to it. Maybe it was due to the lack of snow (usually), but the Christmas lights (especially in central London) and the carol singers sprouting up at many tube stations went a long way to compensating.

Re: Dear Santa...

Can't say I've ever had a mince pie - must be a British thing

Being a New Yorker, Christmas dreams bring to mind a stroll down Fifth Ave in the snow with all the holiday window displays, the Christmas tree and skating rink at Rockefeller Center, Central Park blanketed in snow ... the scent of chestnuts roasting in the streets. Christmas shopping late at night on December 24th! As a kid getting drunk and skitching in the snow behind cars, taxis etc ... oh what memories

Plans this year: a chalet in France near Geneva with 2 sets of cousins and their families to ski - should be lots of fun.

A Secret Santa meetup near the HB to imbibe and celebrate the holiday and maybe taste my first mince pie sounds great
Sue

mince = mincemeat but it's true British mincemeat is slightly different from American mincemeat (and British piecrust is way different).

We've got guests, so no mad struggle for flights and hotel rooms this year. We are hoping for a nice white Christmas to show them - but not so white we can't get out of the front door.

Don't forget about booking a kennel or cattery for your four-legged friends!

When I booked a kennel for my dog a couple of weeks ago, the proprietor told me that he was already close to full for the holidays!

Re: Dear Santa...

Booked my flights to Portugal in August. Price went from 79 € to 340 € in one month.

For X-Mas I wish that Saint Peter behaves himself and lets me enjoy a sunny cold December with my family, maybe without the usual fights.

Re: Dear Santa...

Fruity Christmas Mincemeat Pies

They are quite easy to make yourself. If you don't burn them they will taste nice, even if they might look oddly shaped!

You need to make the mincemeat first, use Bratbutter in place of the Suet. http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/c...mincemeat.html

You could just buy good quality "Blätterteig" or flaky pastry, http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/c...ince-pies.html

Can I watch if you do have one? Especially if it's a proper one...

Then you've just got time to order a box of Harrods 'silver bling crackers', and at only £599, you'd better be quick before they sell out

Re: Dear Santa...

Did you hear about the really mean Irishman who fired his shotgun outside the backdoor on Christmas Eve?
He went in and told his children that Father Christmas had committed suicide.
