Re: Need updated info for visiting Amsterdam - in the rain
Hi there, I am from Amsterdam. lived there all my live. What not to do:
- Touristic things like Madame Tussauds, Bike rental (traffic and rain and you can walk everything anyway) and stay longer than 30mins in the Red Light District
To do:
Walk along the 4 major canals, beautiful architecture, and in the little streets between the canals a lot of small shops, lunchrooms and cafe's Thats where the locals hang out.
Museums: Dont do Rijksmuseum or Stedelijk Museum, they are both closed. New is the Hermitage Depandance from Russia and intersting the Van Gogh Museum.
Just renovated and reopened: the Scheepvaartmuseum (about the history of ships and colonies)
Anne Frank: Extremely busy, go early in the moring or skip it. Its just an inside of a canal house and we all still live in those these days.
Shopping: Bijenkorf or the little streets between de canals
Main street shops: Kalverstraat-Nieuwendijk near Dam Sq.
Nice to do: Museumboat at the Central Stn, hop on and off at the museums and you can see the city really nice from the water.
Do not do: go out in the red light district, its overpriced and only tourists. Go for nightlife to the pubs and restaurants in the canal area / streets between and disco, clubs etc to Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein. Enjoy!
