Kids discovering their body...

My daughter is now at an age where is finding interest in the lower part of her body....!

I am not sure how to explain to her that she should do it in private. I think at 3 years old she may not understand this.

I don't want to tell her NO! Don't do this! Since it is a natural thing and I don't want to make her feel it is wrong.

Any ideas or experiences?

Oh, god... yeah. There was one night in the bath when my little girl, then 3-ish, decided to insert a certain toy into her...well, you get the idea. I was horrified, tried not to laugh, and then ignored it. It seems, at that age, the best tactic is to simply not give the behavior attention that it's designed to get. It depends on the child, of course, and the act, but mostly ignoring behavior you don't want repeated is the sanest course of action as hard as that might be.

It is so completely normal; you are already doing the right thing by not freaking out as many parents might! Poptart is spot-on in saying it is best to just ignore the behavior. If it persists, you might try suggesting (in the most basic kid-speak), that certain areas of our bodies are private, and thus what we do with them is also private, so she should go to her own room or where she can be alone to play in that way.

Oh, I won't say that I didn't...my husband was there in the bath when she decided to do strange things with a particular toy and...for a very reserved man, the range of reactions on his face were priceless, but she's a comedienne and we both, somehow, managed to resist the urge to freak in a meaningful way. After she went to bed, though, we were both laughing, drinking wine and thinking, WTF was THAT all about! Thankfully, she hasn't tried that again...yet.

And don't think I didn't freak the time she started yelling "F**K" in the car after driving around in Boston on a particularly bad traffic day that I didn't freak...it's just that for kids this age, attention is the name of the game. It's everything so anything that gets them more attention will be repeated to infinity. It's not that we don't freak, we just don't want to endure weeks of hearing "F**K" from the back seat.

Re: Kids discovering their body...

When I was 6 we had a neighbour whose 4 year old daughter managed to put gravel from their drive inside herself.
She did not think it was funny when I recounted the story some 15 years later!

I think is more because is the only part of herself that was most of the time covered by diapers. with my boys happens the same thing (2 and 1 y) and when they bath they try to pull it as long as it gets

Ok, on a more serious note, I think the "these are things we do in private" approach is definitely the way to go, I guess "inserting" things is more of a problem from a potential injury standpoint (gravel?! ouch!)...

Her mother had to extract the gravel, not a pleasant experience IIRC!

Re: Kids discovering their body...

My boy is a toddler and my girl is a preschooler and she is really fascinated with his winkie. She often tells me that she wants one (especially when he pulls his in the bath, she also wants something to pull on!) and when I tell her she is a girl and he is a boy and they are different, she gets quite irritated as she is adamant that she wants one too!

This evening while I was putting lotion on my boy after their bath, she sat next to where he was lying and he reached to tough her private parts. She thought it was really funny. I casually told her to go and get her pajamas and as she got up, she placed her bottom on her brothers head and expelled gas! Where she got that from, I have no idea. I hope no-one is doing that to her at her day care. Poor child!

It's really tough not to burst out laughing in scenarios like this!

I'll guess you must have a pretty good idea how the whole thing works by now?
