The coolest thing to get from the US and A for XMAS

Do you know what the coolest thing is you can get from the states for XMAS?

Is it a cherry coke? - nah not really...
Is it the iPhone? - you're wrong again mate!...

IT IS:

http://www.xogiving.org/index.html

The XO Laptop from the one laptop per child program! Costing 399$ which will initially only be delivered within the states.

Buying one for you or for your kid also includes donating another one to a child in a developing country which makes it all the merrier! (For 399$ two laptops are included, one for you and one to donate)

So rock your socks and make sure to be one of the lucky ones to get one of these by november 12th (you can preorder today).

If you're getting one, tell me, and I will personally thank you for making our world a better place. well - via email at least

......

doesn't it look... cool... neat... slick... 1337 ?

(I am not affiliated with the OLPC program and gain no money out of it)

Well, it will come down eventually.

But 399$ is still a great price for such a gadget

If you buy one of these it's not about bang, else you get a proper laptop.

It's actually $399 for 2 machines, but there's a catch. You only get 1, the other is donated to help educate a child in a developing country. Sounds like pretty decent bang for your buck from my perspective...

Well not that I want to boost my self esteem with it, but I was actually one of the people who proposed that business model to the olpc project this January when they replied me that this was never going to happen

I dunno, I think food, medication, clean water and sustainable development are far more important than PC literacy. Probably a lot of these laptops are going to wind up stolen and sold on the black market or just used for browsing porn... yea that's what they need in the developing world, easy access to porn. I think the thought is noble, but misguided.

They have filter software to prevent them from accessing pr0n.

The goal is to give them access to educational stuff. It's a "give a man a fishing rod" type of thing.

Filters will be circumvented, far sooner than later. Like I said, the idea is nobel, however the money can be much better spent on more urgent necessities.

Education is their only way to climb up the ladder. Besides the laptop also has software on it that shows them how to grow crops more effectively get drinking water ect.

I agree, you certainly wouldn't give this laptop to a starving child, but that's not what it's meant for.

I used to work as an underling of Nicholas Negroponte (aka Negropimpdaddy) back at MIT.
Glad to see his crazy idea actually came to fruition.

Glad to hear its coming to Switzerland in 2008.

As for the Asus EEE, we'll apparently have to wait for that too.

Looking for an Asus 'Eee' PC
