Re: A cheesy Birthday.

So, thinking about my birthday, I thought I'd share a little story to brighten up this rather gloomy EF Thursday.....

For every birthday I can remember, since I was a wee nipper, I always had good weather, sun and blue skies, warm and very still. Always the same and it eventually became known as my "birthday weather" and my family and friends always knew that they could rely on it and so we could plan trips to Filey and Whitby and picnics on the North York moors for late summer parties.

It was just a few years ago that I learned that St Lukes day is on October 18th and since Medieval times (in the UK at least) the week surrounding this saints day was known as St Lukes Little Summer.

Now, the villagers and country folk of little England soon recognised that this week would probably be the last period of guaranteed good weather before winter set in so they arranged festivities, drinking, dancing, merry-making and eating. They also saw that they were not alone in noticing this period of good weather. Squirrels would take advantage of the warm dry spell to top up their winter store of nuts and acorns, and so eager were they to grab as much winter protein as possible that they took more risks than normal... meaning that they were easy to catch.

Which of course is why the Feast of St Luke is Roast Squirrel.

It's funny you should mention it but my birthday is on October 2nd and we always had good weather then too. In fact people used to say they should organise events at that time as good weather was almost certainly guarenteed.

We often used to go to the seaside for my birthday and it was always Whitby, Filey or 'Brid' so maybe we were there at the same time (although I suspect I am significantly older than you)
