Ideas for family pet?

Good morning,

I am thinking to get us a family pet but not sure what to go for. I spend my entire life with dogs and cats and I would like to experience the friendship with an other kind of animal.

Birds? No thank you. I love them and would love to one as a friend but I can't stand to keep them in cages.

I am not into rats, snakes, lizards and the alike... No fish either.

It is just a brainstorming and your experience with family pet will give me a better idea of what we could look for or if we should wait until the kids are older.

Thanks,

Nil

Re: Ideas for family pet?

How about a Chinchilla? they live between 12 - 20 years which is unusual for a rodent.

Or just a more interesting breed of cat, e.g. Bengal Tiger cats are extremely active, intelligent and have similar traits to dogs.

Re: Ideas for family pet?

The question is, who wants the pet? The hole family or just the kids?
Remember that it exist the posibility that at the end you will be the only one taking care of the pet ie. hubby goes out of town for work, kids to small to take care of pet, etc.
having any pet develops hard conections and emotions with kids, like i read from your threads you little girl is as smart as it gets and she will realize if the pets dies for example (sorry for being tragic)
If every family member want a pet, then you need to think for example that a cat normally leaves fur all over, will you be ok with your baby and girl with fur on their clothes? Do you have a proper place to have the cat liter? remember your baby soon will start to crawl and he will try to taste everysingle thing around your house and God forbid the cat has bad charachter and scratches the face of your kids.
I would say maybe a dog if you are ready to have like a 3rd child. you need to potty train, feed, bath, vet check up, think ahead on relocation, is the neighborhood pet friendly etc. If you would ask me for a breed I will always say french bulldog, my ex is a french bulldog lover and we had 2, they are fantastic with kids, the kid can be a kid and pull, push, mount etc and the dog will just be quiet and when activities are needed they have tons of energy and they are just great. in my case, I will wait before having a pet because i have already too much with my 2 boys, but every family is diferent and if you do have a pet, i wish you to find the best one for your family

Re: Ideas for family pet?

A huge deciding factor has to be the kind of accommodation you have.

Most children get quickly bored with a caged animal, like a rabbit or guinea-pig. Our neighbour has a rabbit. A friend gave it to her daughter because she was bored with it. After a few weeks, she gave it to her brother, as she was bored with it. And after a few months, the son got bored with it too. It's been living in the corner of the office now for many years. It is fed, watered and its cage cleaned by the mother (or me when they go away).
Same happened to many of our friends in the UK, with gerbils, guineapigs, etc.

Personally I think it is not fair to have cats in apartments- but I know many disagree here.

A dog is wonderful providing it is the right breed and temperament to live in a flat - but it must be exercised regularly, and this perhaps for the next 15 years or more. In 4 years children will be at school - and you might want to become professionally active again - so what then? Would you like to be tied down by a dog?

Not an easy question. Personally I feel it is best for children to be a bit older so they can understand how to handle an animal without hurting it, and understand how consistency is important in training an animal.

A pet fly sounds about right for you, or a hen ... or a Tamagochi!

That cat is stunning! I am just wondering how it is going to leave my leather couch.

Yes I saw it and believe me, I have been thinking about it. But for me, really it is the time, the energy that I can't put into it. I have to be able to bring the dog out for his walk and with 2 kids, not alway easy or possible. If baby is sleeping and dog needs to go, etc. And dogs need lots of attention. I will have one, one day when the kids will be older and the dog will have enough space.

Coconut, I already have a cat and she is with me since 12 years. Sadly, she doesn't have much time left.

The thread title have been change for (in sunny Spain) which isn't necessary anyway since we can go around to get our friend if needed.

Re: Ideas for family pet?

Like you I am not into rats or mice but my kids had hamsters.

They are very easy to look after and your daughter is old enough to handle them and help to clean out and if you go away noone minds looking after them.

The only downside is to make sure you put them somewhere at night where you can't hear them as mine used to make a racket going round on their wheel!!!!!

That's amazing - I wonder why other people have all these smart pets and ours are just stupid our birds can't talk, our fish and turtle can't do any tricks and our dog is so slow he drinks out of the turtle tank LOL

Re: Ideas for family pet?

I had a pet rabbit all through grad school. He was litter box trained, very clean, low maintenance, and very interactive and had A LOT of personality. He roamed around the flat and lived about 10 years. I still miss the little guy I had a pet rabbit when I was about 8 until he died when I was .... I forget 13 or 14 - loved him too.

Did you look at them? They're all fuzzy and cuddly even!

When I was young, living in California, we used to go out in the desert and catch lizards. Mother kept a big (HUGE!) fish tank set up as terrarium so we could keep our new reptile friends for a few days or a couple weeks, then we'd let them go again.

We had horned lizards a few times, this baby one is very cute.

Actually, most anything non-poisonous that you could imagine adventurous 10 - 14 yo kids being able to catch wound up in our terrarium at some point. Many of them are pictured here in "Mojave Brad" blog.

We were a bit less successful getting Chuckwallas as they have a trick they do to help escape predators - they get in small cracks between rocks then breathe in deep so they become wedged in there. Smart guys they are!

Are you very sure you don't want a lizard?
