Coincidence ??? I think not.

This post from Melloncollie got me thinking........

Personally I find any coincidence interesting when it's first hand information...... and not just some urban myth.

Does anyone have a coincidence story to share?

I'll go first.

A bloke applied on the internet (not a good start I know) onto a Vietnam Veterans site for someone who could help him store a Tank* he had just purchased.

We have a family friend who was also a Vietnam vet tank driver and had a small farm close by, so we asked him and he was interested.

He was interested and the bloke came up to visit the property and was satisfied.

The bloke was stoked to hear all the tank stories from the war, and meet my day and his mate and decided to have the tank delivered there.

When the tank arrived, they celebrated with a few beers and more old stories..... but eventually the beers kicked in and my dad's mate had to slip behind the tank to attend to nature.

As you do.... and look around, he was focused on the the serial number on the back of the tank and knew something was strange.

He left my dad and the young bloke alone while he went up to the house.

He came back with a photo album and stood behind the tank and called out to the others "come here...... you're not going to believe this"

It was his tank from Vietnam.

All the war stories where he hit a landmine and blew the track off etc. were all recorded in the maitenance book etc.

*Tank -
Yes, the war museum was selling the tanks to people who had a genuine interest in preserving the machine as they couldn't afford to keep them any longer. The tanks were sold at a lower price than they were worth in scrap metal to any genuine buyer.
Needless to say, the story spread around fast, and people came from all over who could help restore the machine. Including old tank mechanics, and people who could help supply parts (from Rools Royce etc).
Although the weapons system was decomissioned it was restored - ha ha..... it's just a shame you need to sell a small country just to cover the fuel costs.

There are billions of events every day. The chances are one of them is going to be coincidental - million to one chances really do crop up nine times out of ten.

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

I went to school with a girl whose dad turned out to be my dad's best friend back in Malaysia. They had lost touch and hadn't seen each other for about 20 years. Not only had the both of us ended up attendng the same school (in another country) but we ended up living on the same road (in Hong Kong)
It was a really nice coincidence and reconciliation for both our dads

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

Back in 1979 I was queuing in line at Houston airport to fly back to Germany. I had my luggage all nice and clearly marked with name, address of destination etc. A good-looking elderly guy behind me shyly tapped me on my shoulder and asked if I knew a certain lady in Hamburg and gave me my mother's maiden name. He knew that she had married a gentleman with my father's (and my) surname.
Long story short - he turned out to be an old flame of my mother's from X years ago, who I'd heard about when my mother told me old stories with a sparkle in her eye; his father had emigrated from Germany to Namibia, he himself had moved there when my mother had turned him down and then moved on to the USA - Houston, Texas to be precise.
Anyway, I put the two of them back in touch with each other after they'd lost contact for almost 30 years.

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

At the marriage of my niece in Kent in 1997 I met the sister of my sister-in-law for the first time. She married an American in 1960 and moved from London to Boston in the same year. We recognised each other immediately - we had been to the same dancing school in Tottenham in about 1956/7 and had often danced with each other.

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

......... I really should have posted this in a thread where I could offer thanks

But for everyone, thanks

Great stories - I love it !!!

I also forgot to mention another story that isn't so much as a coincidence, but just a cool story.

An ex-gf of mine had a step father who was also in Vietnam the same time as my Dad, and in the same company.

They arrived 6 months apart from each other and didn't meet each other at the time.

But when I told my dad, he could pull up heaps of photo's where the bloke was standing with all my dad's army mates - so he was pretty excited that he could meet this strange bloke who was always in photo's with his mates.

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

When my husband finally met the wife of his best mate from work they realised that they knew each other from when they were teenagers & had spent a summer working together.

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

In uni I stayed in halls with a girl - we became pretty good friends. At the end of the year - she mentioned her cousin used to live in HK and that his dad was in the Gurkha army there, well turns out he was the first boy who kissed me in primary 3? The first boy i ever had a crush on - well cut a long story short - we got in touch again and are now FB buddies! (and he's still cute! ;-))

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

Coincidences fascinate me: My late wife came from Märwil, a small village in Thurgau. In London, in 1958 (where and when we met) working as an au-pair, she went daily on the bus to the City of London College. One day a girl from her village took the seat next to her on the double-decker bus!

Met a guy jogging when I moved to my current place 15 years ago. We get talking and it turns out that my mom was his babysitter many decades ago in Thalwil, ZH.

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

I booked the photographer for my wedding next year and he seemed familiar. I then remembered that we were both volunteers in the Athens Olympics in 2004 at the same place

I was at a work conference and was chatting to a guy there. For some reason he looked familiar and i told him so. He said he thought he had seen me before too but couldn't remember where.

Anyway, when we left, we got the train into zurich and he remembered - he was at my thriller dance class a few months prior!

Re: Coincidence ??? I think not.

My husband was in the scouts - he was about 8 and went to the Jamboree. He kept some memorabilia including his 'scout passport'. We were looking through it one day, and there was a signature page. In the middle of the signature page, with a white section all around it (so it really stands out) is one very neat signature - My husband has absolutely no recollection of meeting him at the Jamboree, but it's definitely his signature!

About 15 years later this kid married his sister...

Yep, it does.

Not classically a coincidence, but still it's a pretty freaky story.
