Re: Word of Today

Your writing is fine, partisan. We aren't (except a few pedantic souls) too hung up on the details. I do ocassionally merge some posts that should be multiquoted, but that's just to remind our gentile mermbership to not take too much space for themselves.

The word of today is:

activism.

I have my doubt about its efficiency, especially when expressed by superfitial symbolism but on the other hand - it has a potential to stimulate an interesting discourse. I guess I believe in system open enough and democratic that would not need any covert dissent.

Re: Word of Today

Mother

Interesting all the different names/words used for Mother around the world. Any favorites?

In UK it's Mum
In Ireland it's mostly Mammy
In N.Ireland it's Ma

My favorite has always been the Swiss German Mama. My kids use to call me Mama when they were smaller and I always loved it. No more.. it's plain Mum now

Is it the same in Ticino? Romandie?

Romandie - "maman". If by kids, or girls. Grown up and guys usually say "mère". Back home it is "máma". I called mine "babi" since she has turned to a grandmom. It is not so fair but everybody does it, it is a bit ironic. She is fully emmersed in her career and "functions" as a babi a few days a year.

"Mother's Day" is the fav flick of my kid this year. Together with "Blended", "Lou - le journal infime", "Les Choristes" and "The War of the Buttons". I think I will have to get Lou's mom's ridiculous glasses, at least for the local mother's day.
