I think I understand something else by the word "Thug".

The more one bugs an other with pedantry, the bigger the chance that someone not so skilled with words will hit him over the head. And then the stickler usually has the impudence to pretend he had nothing to do with it.

| | Re: Word of Today | Quote: | | | | | Embrace.
Embrace change.
I know it was addressed to RufusB, but here's my input.
I say embrace change but I don't do it myself so wholeheartedly in real life. I don't like bad spelling or grammar and propagating them in my native language, it looks lazy and scary to me. I guess I just don't want to open a dictionary one day and see everything I knew has changed. I remember how surprised at the old people's lack of willingness to adjust to current pronunciation or spelling rules I used to be, once. It all looks so clear now.
But, don't underestimate the number of pedants. I noticed more pedants than "thugs" in real life (hehe, funny word to pin down the rules breakers), online fora and things like that are something different. I guess the vast majority of people are neither thugs, nor pedants. They simply have more linguistic registers up their sleeve and are not shy to use them. I think online confrontations arise from our incapacity of assessing the other person's mood. Or our obsession to nail it, be right.
Lol, I would have never thought I would discuss about these things in English, on a public forum. These sort of discussions are reserved for more familiar people or environment, native language, all the comfort they bring. So please excuse all the "babbling". I could really use some coffee..
Anyhow, another words for today that came to my mind after reading an article in a magazine from back home. lingua franca
What would it be after Brexit? French or German? How or will we change anything in this regard too? Just asking myself lately.
I might need to start polishing that rusty, school like French language I posses for now. Oh, the horrors. As if German wasn't enough of a trouble...a trouble that's feeding on the rest of them... | | | | | I like your thoughts, the willingness to share them. Eventhough I don't see eye to eye, it is good to read other people's ideas. You don't come here to offload frustration or poop on other people's conversation or agress. The idea of comfort seeking is interesting, I am not sure it is linked to mother tongue or not, really. After the decades of being elsewhere, mother tongue seems distant, the competence is there but the emotions change.
"Ostentatious."
And "aerosol". I think I am going to take a shower.

. | | | | | I'm not a linguist and I rarely notice patterns in this area so that was only a very subjective interpretation. For me it is, I'm not yet distant, I still read a lot in my native language...I was just thinking that if I had this conversation with one of my oldest friends I would have inevitably replied with two verses from a poet we all know from school, dam' those cultural references. I want to keep my humour but obviously this is not working very well in English.
the word of today should be cool
It's so hot today in my neck of the woods. Incredible.

Bake...Chocolate.Eggs.Cream.Butter. Flour. And corny deco.
Uuuurgh. A class of little ones decided I bake the best. Single mother's dream. Honor of all honors. I got a couple of hours to come up with a decent sacher and it is boiling hot without the oven even switched on. FML is the WOT of the hour.
