Re: The 'C' word....

Flights back to Chicago at Christmastime are absurd, ca 3000 (for economy! ) Not to mention the difficulty of finding pet care over the holidays.

So over the years I've taught my family the delights of celebrating St. Nicholas day. We fly home early December when the flights are far more reasonable, and bring a bit of Swiss tradition to the US.

It's a nice start to the US holiday season, stretches the celebrations out, makes things a little less rushed for all concerned. Win-win.

My husband and I spend Christmas here, quietly. Which we very much enjoy.

Sadly, our Christmas will be at home with not even friends to celebrate it with (yet ).
There are bound to be some local people that really need an "orphan's Christmas family" to be around. When I was in London alone it is very simple to invite some people from the local old age home or shelter to join you for Christmas, thus making it a much more caring occasion for all.

We make the cake a few weeks before and feed it regularly with brandy through holes skewered in the top.

Then about a week before Christmas you put on the marzipan and then the icing. You need to leave a day between putting on the marzipan and icing it.

You can make your Christmas pudding now. That means we'll have a run on suet threads
I make the cake about 2 weeks before too and feed it generously every day and night and mid afternoon you get my drift.... and it's perfect. In fact my xmas cake last year was better than my mums who has been religiously making them 2 months before for my whole life.

And Tom, really, I thought you'd have bought your xmas cake

And I am with Helm, what is it with all the panic? it's just a day

Re: The 'C' word....

Easyjet Zurich / Manchester (Dec 21 / Jan 4 ) - total I paid was about 76 quid I think... booked a few weeks ago though... it's okay if you don't mind travelling cattle-class... compared to swiss or bmi or any of the others I wouldn't care if I had to hang on to the wing by my fingertips for the price difference....

Re: The 'C' word....

We're flying home to Australia for Christmas this year. My husband has saved most of his annual leave so that we can go for 4 weeks and fly out the day before the prices rocket and come back the day after. Even so, we'll be lucky to get change from 12'000 chfs all up (flights, accommodation, car hire etc)

We haven't even considered presents yet. Maybe we should just tie some ribbon on my husband and tell them that all the present money went into bringing him over for lunch

I agree with adrianlondon,
Quote:
I recently paid 495CHF to fly to China (from Basel via Frankfurt) so it is painful to see 400 CHF prices for just an hour's flight
my flight is only 45 mins for 400quid! Plus i will be going via Easyjet from Geneva (thats the only place that flys to bristol from Swissland, or i go to london which means a english coach (ugh) from there to bristol...no thanks!) but i think thats why its so poo because thats 400chf sleazyjet from somewhere 3 hours away! AND dont even get free food on the plane! :P

However, 12,000 chf!! okay i really am lucky!! My gosh thats like my whole years wages!! Do you do that every year?! Thats crazy money in comparrison to what i was moaning about so fair enough!

lathering the cake in brandy sounds like a good idea! i think im going to start shopping around for ingredients this week and get started on the cake this weekend! yay! how exciting!

We can't afford to do it every year. This is the first trip back for us in 2 years. It would be nice if the family lived closer. But at least this way we get a month in the sun in what is the middle of winter over here

*Getting excited and homesick*
