Re: What is it about IT folk

On a related note, how come everybody in CH is touching the monitor with their fingers when they want to show you something? Back home nobody (and I know A LOT of IT people) ever did this. And let me tell you, Swiss hands are not squeaky clean by default

First laugh of the day - thank you very much.

Yes so true - especially the ones that do it 5 mins after you've wiped down your monitor lol

You're absolutely right. It's one of my OTT hates. I can feel my blood pressure rising as I resist shouting, "Get your filthy paws off my screen you disgusting oaf!".

Either don't touch the screen or use someting non-marking to point with. You're not a bloody toddler!

I'm getting stressed just thinking about it.

Re: What is it about IT folk

Depends on one's age.

I leant to type (not well, but I typed) when I was about 8 years old on an old typewriter. You know, the ones which didn't need plugging in

The only way to type was to bash the keys hard enough to make the letter "hammer" hit the paper through the ink ribbon. With Tippex to correct mistakes.

By the time I moved onto a "proper" keyboard (Tandy TRS-80 at school) I already had the bad habit of hitting the keys hard. And just when I was getting softer, along came the Sinclair ZX-81 which needed bashing again.

So now it's stuck. I can type pretty fast (took a typing test at 17 and got some cool Summer data entry jobs, with a wpm score better than the seasoned secretaries who also took the tests with me), but was never taught properly. So I hammer the keys, quite hard, using around 3 fingers. People generally find it amazing to watch. Me, I just get on with my posts to here, err I mean imporant work emails.

There are already at least two threads on this. Don't derail.

After I started working in this company, I noticed my screen was having some tough problems. There was a bunch of grey vertical and horizontal lines showing up, which was confusing me at work (you know, being an architect and all, I use CAD programs the whole day drawing grey lines...). I thought it was a phantom build problem with the screen.

Till I noticed a red line. And a blue one. And I thought WTF?

Then I paid attention to colleagues of mine that either while I was distracted or away, where pointing their pen/pencil on the screen, confirming lines and what not, scribbling all over, or simply "pointing" to a certain detail.

When I used a screen cleaner on a white paper, the thing came out rainbow colour.

Every time someone approaches my screen with a pen now gets bitten.

Is this how they correct their docs?

My boss is 82 years old. One time he got a black marker and was sketching on the screen while I was busy picking up the printed plans from the other room.

So yes, I wouldn't be suprised to see some white paint on screens. BUT WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE MYYYYYYYYYYYYYY SCREEN???????
