What is it about IT folk

...that makes them batter their keyboards to death when typing?

It seems like all my colleagues do it, and thinking back so did many of my former colleagues. I'm guilty too.

Is it 'cos we never learned to touch type but need to peck and poke at speed?

Re: What is it about IT folk

It's a manifestation of our deep-seated annoyance at the machines for never doing what we obviously just told them to do

Edit: of course I would never imply that us IT folk are all bitter and cynical...

Re: What is it about IT folk

I still miss the clickety old Sun type 3 L1-A keyboards that would make a lot of noise and needed a bit more pressure than the later models. Maybe it's the many hours spent alone with the computer that makes it seem like you've got company in it's morse-like code. The new ones are way too quiet...

Coders usually hunt and peck. My touch typing skills are non existant thanks to drop down menus when coding. I hit "." a lot and wait for the menu.

Re: What is it about IT folk

I'm only a hobby IT gal, but when I buy a new keyboard I pay more attention to the clickty clicktika than the price/ ergonomic/ brand/ environment friendliness of the keyboards. It's quite fun to watch me in the store buying one...

Since I never learnt to play the piano, I like to imagine I am making beautiful music while clicking away the very tidy html/php code I once and a while write... And maybe because I am clinically insane, some clickty clicktika makes certain nerds more attractive than others...

Drop down menus? That's not coding, that's glorified Minefield.

I tend to bash the keys when I'm in the flow, I'm usualy trying to get something down as quickly as possible before I stop understanding what I was trying to do.

Pouah don't tell me about that! Long time ago, I had a freak IT boyfriend who thought his keyboard was made of feathers. He kept going nuts everytime someone was using it, screaming at them they will break it.

Re: What is it about IT folk

It's these Swiss German keyboards. Some silly sod hid my "y" in the corner where the zed should be, and graffitied it with all sorts of umlauts.
