laptop repair: please help

i have a HP Pavilion entertainment notebook and it is not getting switched on. Actually all the lights are glowing and cd drive is getting open but the screen is black. Before it started working if i switched it on after few hours. After that it stopped but there was a cursor blinking on the left hang upper corner and now it has also gone. Do not know what to do.↲Can you help or repair it for a small amount?↲I know that if i give it for repair, it is going to cost me a fortune

Hello stressed oneWe have the same computer-but working fine. The one before died after 1.5 yrs from overheating.....what a headache.Fans need circulation space.anyhow, maybe if you vaccuum the back&side vent areas-while it's switched off of course!-also,remove the battery and suck out all the dust, even tho you might not see it.Put it back tgthr, say something nice to it and plug it in and....hopefully-it will come on.Give it time, don't panic and click something 100 times-be patient.
What about the warranty?I know, more trouble than it's worth.
I have a computer tech friend who makes home visits as well if the bloody thing still won't come on,bit i think it will-
good luck!!

Re: laptop repair: please help

What is the exact model? It could be that the graphic card has died or BIOS malfunctioning...I can't be too sure. What is the exact model, maybe there will be similar stories on google, let's find out.

@OP

Try not to vacuum. The rush of air creates static that can damage sensitive motherboard components.

There is an update that caused a "Black screen of death" , google for that.

Could it be that the display switch is set to external ? Have you tried connecting to a external monitor and seeing if you get some sort of display.

The GPU / Graphics chip may have gone. Not a lot can be done if that is the case.

Re: laptop repair: please help

Had the same laptop and this died from overheating after just over a year. Took it to a repair shop at first where they tried to fix it but told me that this was something they had seen before with this make. So needless to say I replaced it with something else. Sorry to not be of more use

Re: laptop repair: please help

What about warranty? I had problems with my Asus ee pc not so long ago. And even though I've bought it in another country and of course had no receipt no box, they took it and repaired two times. Asus has worldwide warranty. I think hp too. Try to write in help desk.

If other suggestions fail, there's a small computer shop near the Manor in Lausanne.
I'm in London and can't think of the name of the shop, or of the street they're on, but it's at the bottom of the steps from the metro at the Riponne and a few doors on from the Bodyshop, going down towards Payot.
I haven't used them myself but, according to an Australian friend of mine, they speak good English and are very efficient.

Re: laptop repair: please help

the HP Pavillions especially the 9000 overheat and then the graphics chip fries...

the repair involves completely stripping down the notebook, putting decent thermal paste under the cpu and graphics chips (something HP should have done) building a heat shield from a coke can to put around the graphics chip to shield and dissipate heat, and then reflowing the solder on the graphics chip pins, which involves using a blow torch to heat it up to 210 degrees.

It is a design fault, but good luck claiming anything under the warranty...

I realised mine was overheating early so since then I've always used mine raised up off the desk with a desktop fan blowing air over and under it from the back laft corner, which seems to have prevented this problem, but makes it completely useless as a laptop...

Re: laptop repair: please help

took out the battery and did what was told...
tried another external monitor also...
nothing worked out
the laptop is not under warranty...was bought in the US ..and the same problem occurred in the past too...that time it was under warranty... the laptop traveled to the US and the same was rectified...
WHAT TO DO ???

Re: laptop repair: please help

Try to get into the CMOS BIOS, and turn on the fan activity to high ( laptop might sound noisier but who cares ) and save the settings, reboot. That should take care of the heating issue for a while.

Also, work on an area where air flow gets underneath the machine ( laptop cooling pads are a good idea CHF20 off Ebay for example ). Amazing results can be achieved by raising the laptop just half an inch from the base, leaving the center underneath well ventilated.

Also, use an external keyboard and external mouse when the typing becomes difficult as a result of the raised laptop.

If all this fails, try to sell it off on Ebay as a pre-loved damaged item, and buy a non-HP laptop ( except their fine Elitebook and Envy series ) that has better cooling and ventilating designs.

Good luck.

Re: laptop repair: please help

Hi
Had the same problem. Lights on but screen not working. The cost of repair exceeds the cost of buying a new one . I use the laptop connected to a tv as DVD player. You can use it as well connected to a monitor. Obviously it's not a laptop anymore but a fake desktop.
Bought a Sony Vaio instead. Hopefully it will not be disappointing as HP which lasted less than 2 years.

Re: laptop repair: please help

Acer Aspire base getting very hot - cause for concern?

I also have HP & Compaq laptops, two years old, with heating problems. I followed HPs advice and changed a few settings which helped reduce the heat by about 30%.

However I have just bought a simple 2 fan unit, and the difference is amazing, it's on special offer, costs Sfr 7 plus Sfr 9 for post and packaging
