The world just ground to a halt...

I'm posting this in the General Off-Topic section, not in TV / internet / telephone, because it is a general Internet topic, not limited to Switzerland.

A while ago, some time after 2:00 a.m. on November 3, 2011, Google.com was down for several minutes or maybe even longer. It just was not accessible from any of my computers, which worked fine otherwise and could access the Internet without a problem.

So my thoughts were, what happens to the world if Google kicks the bucket for good or for a longer period of time? I mean, we've got used to it to a degree that makes us totally depend on it.

Twelve years ago, there were dozens of search engines around, each of them with different characteristics. Now practically every search engine except a few very specialized ones redirect to Google. When I tried yahoo.com instead of Google, after contacting the DNS server, the address in the address bar changed to google.com and then got stuck too.

Are there any search engines around that survived Google and can take its role in case Google goes on the blink for more than just a few minutes? Anybody around who knows more?

For me Yahoo! does not redirect to Google. And in any case a company called, IIRC, Microsoft, has a nifty (well, sort of) search engine called bing.

Well, if Google goes to 'business heaven' and kicks the bucket, I can think of 3 major companies that would all vy for the scraps off the carcass- Yahoo, Microsoft (Bing), and Apple. I don't think any have the capital to make such an acquisition alone, so Google would be parted off, a new round of competition begin between the remaining players, and when the dust would settle, Webster would replace 'googling' with 'binging' or 'yahooing,' or 'appleing' in their next dictionary.

I've started using Bing again since the Google caching seems to not work now on all sites. I love way the Bing pictures scroll nicely too.

It's my sister's birthday. Everything grinds to a halt on that day.

That's exactly the URL that got me to the stuck google.com last night, and that three times on each of my three computers at home. How come? I mean, nine attempts with the same result! There's something very fishy there.

What I mean is not filling the gap or taking Google over after some time with warning in advance but being able to come to the rescue if, say, the entire google facilities get totally invaded by a very mean virus that has been slumbering in all back-ups for years, making them unusable too etc.. Are there other search engines that have the mere hardware power to stand a sudden assault by billions of frustrated Google users without blowing all fuses?

I was born in an era of books. If Google doesn't work, and also Yahoo, Bing and the myriad other search sites wouldn't work, I'd just get the freaking encyclopaedia and look it up.

Because yes, I still own an Encyclopaedia, and about 10 Dictionaries, and countless other books.

And there are always computer games to pass the time while my research is not possible...

Bing sucks as a search engine. I never get helpful search results when I use it.

Plus... You can "Google" your bf but if you "Bing" your bf everyone will think you're doing something else to him.

can your encyclopaedia help you find a good LOLcat? or your dictionaries cover the terms found in urbandictionary?

I have Photoshop. And cats. And a stupid sense of humor.

And I am not afraid to use it!

That's why meeting new friends in alchool haze is very important to learn extremely important words and expressions in foreign languages that will for certain be imprescindible to my professional and personal development.

No Google can take that away!

(go on Meisie, just do it!)

P.S.: The very first word I learnt in German: drecksau

No. I simply went to my freshly bought "Learn German in 30 days" and looked for "Pig" to shout at the drecksau that was doing drecksau things in front of the bus station.

My second word was Schnautze. I still love using that one.

I own about 8500 books, among them two big encyclopedias (worth about 14,000 CHF) and several dozen dictionaries, but very often (read: several times a day) they don't get me anywhere.

These days books are a nice-to-have-thing but not an up-to-date source if information. And games don't help when you have to get the info NOW.
